Free online learning for GPs - Reducing the clinical interval between presentation, diagnosis, and referral improves blood cancer outcomes

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. In the run up to September are you able to help us bring this free course to the attention of GPs in your area?

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) plays a major role in keeping GPs informed to maximise positive health outcomes in local communities.

Early diagnosis, appropriate testing, referral and care improves cancer patient outcomes.

Leukaemia CARE has worked with the RGCP to develop an online training course to help GPs recognise the signs and clusters of often vague symptoms that may indicate a patient has blood cancer.

These often vague symptoms of leukaemia are also common to many unrelated problems and can make leukaemia difficult to recognise.

Our two 30-minute, free of charge, CPD modules on blood cancers will help GPs to:

•better understand and recognise the symptoms of blood cancers

•identify potential cases of blood cancer

•refer patients for further tests more quickly

•make informed decisions

I've said before that you have to 'train' your GP ...

I've been lucky so far ( or maybe I'm just a wonderful teacher !) ... in that I have an interested GP who listens ... and not just talks.

One of the latter was not pleased when I informed him that the most important person in the room was ... me.

I ditched him. Well, I was never going to get through to him ... I didn't go to Doctors School.

Last month we were discussing a blood test that I had, I said that it was only my Consultant who watched and waited ... whilst, I/we continually had to deal with any symptoms ... she replied " I never thought of it in that way "

I used to 'teach' apprentices in engineering workshops, and later as glassblowers ... If I wasn't disabled, I should still be doing so ...

( thinks ) ... that wouldn't work nowadays ... I was taught in pre PC days ... most of my instructions would have them heading for a 'no win no fee ' lawyer.

Doctors hate being informed that you are the patient, you have the illness, they do not, and if they would just stop looking at the screen for one minute and look at you, then talk to you, then your life and theirs would be easier. There are still a lot of Doctors who have a "God complex" I cannot and will not let them deal with me.
