Complications, complications, complications.

We should all agree about how well the human body was created – but we need to help it maintain its complex functions. So when I was told that my maintenance drug Idelasilib’s side effects (Zydelig.) was probably causing diarrhoea I decided to accept this inconvenience against the good that the PI3K Inhibitor was doing.

However, the next thing I found out was that the Diarrhoea could be the cause of Hypokalemia – Low Potassium. Now Potassium is only 0.20% to 0.35% of your body mass and on average you should take in about 5 grams each day – which a healthy diet can provide. (And if you take in too much Potassium the kidney is the main organ that controls the balance of potassium by removing excess potassium.)

So what does our body need this second lightest metal for:-

•Muscles need potassium to contract.

•The heart muscle needs potassium to beat properly and regulate blood pressure.

•When potassium levels are low, you can become weak as cellular processes are impaired.

But I am not alone with this condition as hospital surveys have found one out of five people hospitalized have a low potassium level.

So a course of Potassium tablets and all is well – till the next complication !

Marty.

Psalm 139 : 13 – 16

13. For you produced my kidneys, YOU kept me screened off in my mother’s womb. 14. I praise you because in an awe-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know this very well. 15. My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was woven in the depths of the earth. 16 .Your eyes even saw me as an embryo all its parts were written in your book regarding the days when they were formed before any of them existed.

Marty, I hope you don't encounter another side effect to impact your treatment. It certainly isn't something we can know for certain as we enter the journey of treatment. May your road become less bumpy.

Hi Marty

This is the storyof CLL it seems. One thing leads to another. Solve it and something else may appear.

On the whole how are you tolerating Idealisib Marty,

Asking the question as this will be my next treatment along with retuximab (yuk). The reaction juice.

Best wishes are sent and hope no more complications for a while.

Marty an excellent and timely post for me. I hope all on TKI check their Chem-12 every other month. A simple blood test can save you a lot of worries. For some reason my calcium and potassium levels have been lower than normal since I started taking Imbruvica. This is another question for Dr. Coutre in my appointment with him on Sep 20th. I will definately share my findings with everyone as soon as I get any clear answers.
