Facebook Moments - the moments in which you may have no say...

Last week Facebook launched their new app 'Moments' on both Android and iOS, which is designed to help you share photos from particular events with people who were there with you by using facial recognition. Dan Jerker B. Svantesson, Co-Director Centre for Commercial Law at Bond University, Queensland, Australia and member of the Australian Privacy Foundation, considers that Facebook’s new photo app is a creepy moment for privacy:

Interestingly, Facebook is not yet offering 'Moments' in Europe because of regulators' concerns about its facial-recognition technology...

For those wishing to know more about how this app was developed, this TechCrunch article covers it fairly well:

techcrunch.com/2015/06/15/f...

Worryingly, this article states: "Moments repeatedly mis-tagged people, mistaking friends for each other just because they’re the same ethnicity, or grouping photos together that had nothing to do with each other. Left swiping a set seemed daunting, even though it doesn’t delete you(r) photos. Right swiping means anyone you sync with could then share those photos wherever they want. And the stacks of photo sets you’re choosing whether to sync aren’t easy to make decisions about in a glance."

Those interested in maintaining their privacy also need to know that sites that have the Facebook or other social media site logos on them (including this site - but for open posts only - see below*), enables those social media companies to track your use of the sites you visit displaying those logos. You can avoid that by using your browser's private browsing feature, which are as follows for the different browsers:

Internet Explorer - InPrivateBrowsing

Chrome - Incognito

Firefox and Opera - Private Window

For browsers supporting add-ons, you can also choose an add-on that enables you to selectively block the 'sharing' icons for social media sites on a site by site basis. *You'll also notice that on this site, HU correctly automatically blocks these 'sharing' icons when you are viewing posts that are 'for this CLL Support community only':

Photo: The same sea laps all our shores; the only boundaries are those that we impose. It's the same with the Internet. I'll leave you to sit and ponder.

Thanks once again Neil for an enlightening post. I am not on Facebook but while on a trip to Italy, pictures posted by a friend to Facebook allowed others to follow us on our trip. Since my dx, I value my privacy even more since I have shared my dx with only a few and not told even my 91 year old parents...who are on Facebbook!
