Explainer: how and why is research assessed?

Our hopes for better drugs to treat and hopefully soon cure our CLL are reliant on pertinent research. So how are research papers assessed and how does this relate to their usefulness to society? While citing the situation in Australia and how it compares with that in the UK, this is still a good guide to the process by which medical research papers in particular are assessed.
