Weaning to solid foods

My baby has Biliary Atresia and has started on baby food, is their anything that should not be given to her or is not good for the liver. I've read that as long as it's a balanced diet it should be OK but just thought I'd check.

Hi, balanced diet is best. We had additional Vitamin K supplements prescribed, which definitely help. Try lots of dark green vegetables, which all children should have if possible. Our daughter loved broccoli when she was weaning and had few problems once she relearnt how to chew and swallow.(nasal feed tube for 12 months)

She is nearly 12 years old and very fit and healthy, can run a mile in ten minutes; little prospect of ever needing a liver transplant. Hope yours is well too.

Hi fellow BA mum

Yes a balanced diet. which country are you in? in the UK BA kids have access to a dietician so if you are worried ask your medical team if they have one. If your little one is on special formula or needs extra calories etc the dietician will help with all that side of it.

General advice I would give to any mum is make sure you give a really good variety of veg. If they turn their nose up at it try again a few days later or mix it with a small amount of carrot so the taste isn't so strong.

Don't give too much carrot in the diet though as 1) they love the sweetness of it n can then refuse everything else. 2) It can in some cases like my son make children's skin orange (its not jaundice its the carotine).

Don't avoid carrot though.

I only fed organic when our daughter started weaning so there were less chemicals for the liver to deal with. I don't think there is any real evidence that its better I just felt it might help!

Our daughter is now 13 has her native liver, no meds and eats anything and everything!

Good luck just post any questions n I'll try to help.

Take care

X

I've started her on baby jar foods at minute but will be blending own. Are the jars OK to give to start with.
