Biliary Atresia Boxing!!!

My son is nearly 14 and desperately wants to go boxing. He's had a tough year mentally which has left him with bad moods and he feels boxing will help him. Who can I ask about the limits and boundaries with a biliary atresia child regarding boxing. TIA

My son has to wear full body armour to do kickboxing but he is only 7 so they don't hit as hard. He can not compete as too high risk but spars with the kids at the club who are aware of his condition. We've been advised to stop when he gets older but we hope that he will keep hitting pads as its such good exercise and does direct aggression to a helpful place.

Let me know how you progress with this boogiebex76 (like your profile name!) My son is almost a year and a half and I can tell he will need an outlet as I do with my Zumba and his father does boxing....

I like DeaconEllie's idea of pads for hitting as I can imagine boys need an outlet during puberty and exercise is a win win. I am just a little anxious as you know how stubborn boys can be and although I want him to remain healthy I also want to keep him safe. Just not bubble wrapped!

He's knocked the idea on the head because he has been told not to fight! Hitting the pads just isn't enough for him so he gave up :(

Thank you for your reply Yaa_Akrasi and thanks for liking my profile name :)

Hi boogiebex76, What about something like circuit training? It's aggressive, demanding, it has a competitive edge and done in a group setting. I like it as you really sweat and it's exhausting! Some classes also have an element of kickboxing....

Hi, I would ask at your liver centre, the consultants there should be able to advise you if it's ok, if he needs to wear a spleen guard or take any other precautions.

Spleen guard just isn't enough Consmum. We were told by the boxing peeps that in boxing you take a lot of body shots and mostly to the spleen to slow that person down. Thankfully Jamie my son gave it up cos hitting the pads just wasn't enough for him. Kings college hospital were against all forms of contact sport.

Thanks for your reply.

It would be really interesting to know how you got on with contacting your liver unit :)

Hi David

Thanks for your reply. I spoke to Kings and they were against all contact sports. Not to say that it doesn't go on but if we did carry on with Boxing the consequences could be devastating - even a spleen guard couldn't protect him. The guy at the boxing did mention boxers aim for the spleen to slow the opponent down. Jamie gave it up cos hitting the pads wasn't what he wanted.

Hope you are well.

It must be disappointing for Jamie but what the doctors decide trumps all doesn't it :(

Also I never knew that boxers aimed for the spleen
