Eating a healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables (easy on the fruit juices though) oat based cereals and increasing your exercise regime is the only way to go. You don't need to join a gym but watching your weight, exercising through walking, or if you are able to a little light running or swimming regularly ie daily, mixing them up if you wish but keeping active and watching the alcohol intake and stopping smoking will probably do more for your overall health than any cholesterol lowering. The thrashing we give our bodies through poor diet and the chemicals we put inside ourselves from cigarettes and alcohol make the cholesterol rise because it is trying to heal our bodies. Once we get our bodies back in tune the levels go down. That is why there is such a fuss over lowering them. It does look good on paper but we need to realise that the levels of C in the body is not a cause but a symptom. Go well.

Hi,

Lowering cholesterol? You need to look at some of the basic elements, sex, age, height, weight and other medical conditions in you and your family history. What results did you get for total cholesterol, HDL,LDL and triglyceride?

Life style change may reduce cholesterol. HNS food plate, I am not sure. There are vegitables, fruits and nuts that may help you to reduce cholesterol.

Patch14, it is my diet that I need to review. I ride 4 miles to and from work every day, and another 5 miles daily actually doing my job, combined with climbing stairs regularly! I am a non smoker and do not drink alcohol ( at all), thus my request for tips regarding diet. Again thanks.

You may not have Diabetes but Diabetes U.K is great for healthy eating plans and you certainly can loose weight without going hungry

I would contact HEART UK as their dieticians have so many superb ideas and recipes. My own "musts" are lots of oats, very, very little animal fat, lots of oily fish, onions, garlic plus fresh fruit and vegetables. Since I was diagnosed with FH, almost thirty years ago, the only thing I have missed is cheese. So, I treat myself when eating out or entertaining. Oh yes, red wine (in moderation) is a help to reduce cholesterol levels (but, unfortunately, not available on prescription).

Hi,

Breakfast--- Roasted garlic, sprinkling of cinnamon powder, turmeric powder on breakfast ots can help.

Lunch--- Beetroot, tomato Roquefort cease, other colourful vegetables salad for lunch can help.

Dinner, grilled fresh or smoked oily fish and roasted colourful vegetables with boiled soya beans can help.

Boiled cinnamon stick for drink can also help, boil one stick, one cup of water, take ½ in the evening put the other half in the fridge and have in the morning.

Try the above for few weeks.

I have a blog which directly addresses your question of what to eat while reducing your cholesterol. I lowered mine in 90 days using the recipes I have written up on the website. You can look at all these recipes and pick ones you like. There is also a 90 day diary with lots of information about what foods affect cholesterol levels as well as discussion about exercise and keeping motivated. You can find it at fromthehealthyheart.com . For me the key is to keep eating well even though you have to remove/reduce certain foods. There are also delicious one to add in. Good luck.
