You don't say what your levels are, but cardiologists like total cholesterol below 4 now. Assuming your diet is good make sure you are not eating items high in saturated fats - crisps, fried foods, cheese, pastries etc. Eat plenty of fresh fruit & veg from your local independent shop(supermarket stuff is not fresh) and things like red grapes, oily fish. Exercise is also brilliant, if you don't exercise much now, walking is good, but if you can swim & cycle which is excellent non-load bearing exercise. Good luck.

This is not a link but copy and paste it into your browser if you want an excellent read about cholesterol. It takes time to get through it all but you will certainly be more informed about cholesterol by the end and more able to make an informed decision.

seems it has come through as a link so just hit on it;)

It depends what borderline means. Age really doesn't have to be a factor. My husband is older than you with a cholesterol level of 4.5. The previous recommended level was below 5, but the goal posts have been shifted!

From all my reading age is relevant...as you get older cholesterol levels will rise, this is normal for some people, but we are all individuals and 'one size doesn't fit all'. If Vaughchris has had low cholesterol until now I would think age is likely to be a factor.

Hello,

You need to look at all the values, total, ratio, LDL, HDL and triglycride.

Please do Google to get NHS values and also you can use the calculationh to get some valuse. Watch out for units of measurments. Life style change can help to reduce cholesterol levels.

I think it's the ratio rather than the total which is more relevant. Without you saying what your numbers are it's hard to judge.

As above, we need to understand all of the cholesterol numbers and other medical conditions! Our body needs cholesterol.

UK doctors are astonishingly aiming for total cholesterol of 4 mmol/l (155 mg/dl) or LDL of 2 mmol/l (77 mg/dl) although they consider total cholesterol of 5 mmol/l (193 mg/dl) or LDL of 3 mmol/l (116 mg/dl) as a “minimal acceptable audit“.

Then there is HDL, triglyceride and many more.

High blood pressure, osteoporosis of the spine, dairy intolerant. Si joint problem at the moment so think lack of exercise is partly at fault.
