any tests for Familial hypocholesterolemia?

hi there,

Asking for hubby 54 who runs twice a week, plays table tennis, walks 40 mins a day, healthy diet (although we are looking at sugars, fats and the various debates), has done dry January due to a dodgy bilirubin result which corrected in 4 weeks not drinking.

Cholesterol blood tests from 5 years ago to date all show HDL at 1 or lower with LDL over 5.5-6.0.

he has slightly high blood pressure, thyroid is slightly hypo but not enough for sub clinical.

Possible testosterone deficiency but needs testing, he is following that up.

Father died of stroke (details unknown), mother died from arterial burst (thought to be caused cortisol use, all arteries and veins were clear).

does anyone know of GPs can test for familial hypocholesterolemia? 🌱

I have Familial hypercholesterolemia discovered after exercising like crazy and losing a lot of weight trying to drop my cholesterol numbers that eventually lead my doctor to say I have Familial hypercholesterolemia …. No testing that Im aware of.

Seems to me that he has a fairly high ldl level and low hdl. Here is an article from Mayo clinic. Genetic testing is possible - but the Cholesterol #s are the main diagnostic. mayoclinic.org/diseases-con...

Triglycerides are important too.

Ah ok, his triglycerides are in the middle of the range…. Is it important to be high or low? Thanks for responding 🌱

You want them low (ish)

Thanks fasting was 1.38 and the website says below 1.7. Would that suggest to you that it’s not familial? Just can’t seem to raise HDL no matter how are he tries.

I’ve got no medical training. I don’t know much about familial hypocholesterolemia - other than if several close relatives have had heart attacks / strokes I would imagine that might indicate familial hypocholesterolemia.

I only know that triglycerides count and you want them low.

Thanks yes that does make sense, from this it looks like LDL isn’t super high so the healthy living seems to be working on keeping LDL down, which according to this is the key aim. Much appreciated 🌱

Thanks , we think it’s low HDL he needs to deal with rather than high LDL.

appreciate the link, I watched a few minutes but it seems more ApoB focused which as I understand it transports the LDL. So the focus is on LDL not clearing. Or…. did I miss something obvious 🤷🏽‍♀️🌱

High LDL can also be because of his liver from medication or just because… Im currently dealing with crazy LDL elevated liver test… mine is most likely medication induced.

His latest test says non HDL, is that LDL? That was 4.7. Previous tests have been 5.5+ thanks 🙏

Non-HDL cholesterol: This is all the cholesterol in your blood that isn’t HDL. The formula for calculating this number is simple: Total cholesterol – HDL = Non-HDL cholesterol

Ah so not LDL then that doesn’t seem to have come up. Thanks for explaining 🌱

Hello,

You post, would it be possible for you to give all lipid readings?

There is a man made formula for total cholesterol, which helps doctors to understand cholesterol better ? Now days doctors use different parameters to look at cholesterol and do QRISK and JBS3 analysis.

Heart UK has a lot of information and help on FH.

Take care.

Thanks I’ll dig out the spreadsheet after work and post it, good idea 👍

You can learn more about FH in the link below:

I have been a member for over 10 years, when I started it was Heart UK, many people moved on and now it is Cholesterol Support.

Please note people with double digit total cholesterol have lived a normal life.

Take care.
