Should one take Q10 if one is on statins as a matter of course? If so, what dosage?

Statins & Q10
yes if your going to take your statins you must take coq10 or better still ubiquinol 100Mg a day
One should consult the GP. Would it be possible for you to let us know your cholesterol levels and statin dosage? Have you considered food intake control (LCHF) and regular exercise to reduce cholesterol id it is take as primary medication?
Good luck.
Yes I am aware of the food and exercise issues. My cholesterol did jump to 8.4 a few months ago but was 5.6 at my last blood tests in the summer. I take 20g of Atorvastatin which seems to have done the trick. My daughter tells me I should be taking Q10 as well to help with energy levels. I am a little wary of taking yet more pills though as I have underactive thyroid and B12 deficiency, both of which could be causing low energy levels. I just wondered what the current thinking on the Q10 issue is in the real world of sufferers rather than doctors!
My cholesterol was high, GP wanted me to go on statin, I delayed it for a while but in the end tried statin my total cholesterol came down to 2.8. Because of side effect I gave up statin and continued with life style change and regular exercise and am maintaining my weight and waist line. My total cholesterol is bit high, GP's words we are monitoring it with blood test every six months to check cholesterol and HbA1C number. Check heart rate during exercise.
To make sure that my heart is healthy, did go for a twelve lead electro cardiogram and an echo cardiogram. Cardiologist report no medication required! Not taking any supplement at the moment.
From my experience GP's know very little about Q10 so would not think about recommending it. The thinking is that statins deplete Q10 as well because they block the same production cycle. Pharmacists are a good source of information, but Q10 in big doses is expensive. The medical "establishment" will say that there are no controlled trials of Q10 benefits, although anecdotally people on this site have found it beneficial.
There seems to be, or to have been, a trial but I can't followup on this right now. Please see:
Who is the best person to answer the question on "Statins & Q10" ?
GP, cardiologist or Heart UK members?
There is no established ideal dose of CoQ10. Studies have used doses of CoQ10 ranging from 50 milligrams to 1,200 milligrams in adults, sometimes split into several doses over the course of a day. Follow the instructions on the bottle or get advice from your doctor or a dietitian. Keep in mind that different supplement brands might have different ingredients and strengths. Also take Magnesium, particularly as Magnesium oil as it is vital to good heart health. Google for more information.
I saw my GP this week about taking Q10... he said that he couldn't recommend them but that I could try them for three months when my next blood test is due.
He didn't seem to know much about them but was interested. He checked up to see if there was liable to be and that any conflict with the Statin I am taking...appears not
I would be interested in any comments from those already taking them.... reviews seem to idicate they help a lot with energy loss in particular also blood circulation
