My husband was changed from Simvastatin to Avorastatin...I have noticed a marked decline in his memory. Anyone else experienced this?

beat me to it Mike. Incidentally when I mentioned statin memory problems to the consultant yesterday, she said that Statins had been shown to prevent Alzheimers. This is absolutely NOT the case - there is an association between LDL levels and Alzheimers, but absolutely no proof that either high LDL levels cause Alzheimers, or that statins prevent it.

I've been been reading Duane Graveline's blog as well and it's one of the things that put me off taking statins.

Just makes me wonder how many residential/nursing home folk (and their relatives) are having the final years made a misery by statination.

Yes, I experienced this on a big scale....couldn't work out simple arithmetic, spelling, remembering......and this happened very quickly. Since stopping statins the return to "normal" has been very slow...so beware, almost there after nearly 12 months. Unless there is absolutely no alternative I would stay well away from statins, your husband seems to have a sensitivity to atorvastatin so this may be the same with other variants. And CoQ10 is a must when taking them as it is a vital nutrient that is destroyed by statins. IMHO..!!

Ultimately, there is no difference between one statin and another since they all do the same thing. Block the function of one of the most important organs in our bodies. The list of negatives and side effects runs into the hundreds. For someone who had a photographic memory, I could not remember copying a telephone number and could only do so one digit at a time. Do your home work. Take care that the advice you read is not put out by a company, i.e. pharma, After years of being on a statin, now that I have been of for just over two years, it is like being reborn. No joke.

Hello,

You are spot on, on memory. At 67 having difficulty with numbers, as an engineer numbers were very important for my job!!

We all have to do our home work. Food intake control, or medication or what!

Statin and not being able to sit on a toilet in the morning is a big problem!!

No Joke. What is next?

All,

Are doctors going to tell you what they take? In my family there are many of them, in denial. We need to understand our body and act accordingly! good luck.

I have. I have now stopped taking any statins and am trying to do more to improve my lifestyle.

I was switched from simvastatin to atorvastatin because the original simva was destroying the small lower calf muscles.

The dose they gave me was 20mil daily although the advised dose for 70 year olds was 10mil, and only in special circumstances. After about 2years of this dosage, I found lung damage and destruction of the surface brain cells leaving me without the ability to remember names or recognise faces (hence being called 'stuck-up'!!!).

This is appalling!

So called 'side' effects are not so much on the 'side' in this post.

Whilst the current official view on 'contra indications' is dismissed airily as 'minimal and rare' are anything but to the people here who are those unfortunate few.

It's one thing to glance at the prescription leaflet pre dosing, entirely another six months down the line when that same leaflet falls from an uncomprehending hand!
