I am trying high strength lecithin cap... - Cholesterol Support
I am trying high strength lecithin capsules for high cholestrol. Anyone else used this suppliment?
No!
I use a more common plant Sterols and Omega 3 combination.( Flax seed works for vegetarian diets) These do take time to give results - up to 6 months -, so meantime wait and see if the lecithin works for you. IF changing remember results are very slow to be recordable
I take lecithin regularly. I am not aware that lecithin would reduce someone’s cholesterol level but it does help cholesterol move more freely around the body. Generally where there is cholesterol then lecithin is nearby. As an example, egg yolks are high in both cholesterol and lecithin. Lecithin is an emulsifier that allows water and fats to mix, hence why we use eggs to make cakes etc as the lecithin in eggs allows the water and oils to mix.
Sadly most people are low on lecithin because vegetable oil manufacturers remove lecithin because it ‘gums up’ their equipment so they consider it a nuisance. Then they sell it to health food stores who sell it to people who realise that one of the most important ingredients in edible oil was removed in processing. Conversely with unadulterated oils, something like Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains about 1.5% lecithin because it’s not processedin any way. The bottom line is that the lecithin capsules that you are taking are really very good for you and will help improve your overall health.
For the benefit of other readers to this site, it’s useful to know that our cell membranes are over 80% phospholipids and the greatest source of phospholipids is lecithin. In fact, lecithin is nearly pure phospholipids, and the key attribute of a phospholipid is that they are water and oil friendly which is a very unique and important property. So lecithin helps keep your cells structurally healthy.
So in summary, I don’t believe your cholesterol numbers will change too much, but you can be confident that you are adding back in a very important nutrient that allows the fat molecules and water molecules to work together more easily and efficiently, also that it will reduce the viscosity (stickiness) of the blood etc which is a good thing to prevent strokes.
I have been taking lecithin for some 30 years and often tend to overlook it when advising patients about healthy things to do, but your post brought this to mind, and I hope others will be encouraged to do some research into lecithin and consider supplementation. This morning I made some pancakes using 50% almond flour and 50% self raising flour and I included 1.5 tablespoons of lecithin granules. With smoothies I use 1 tablespoon lecithin granules. I think the capsules you are taking are the best, and the granules are the second choice but often more easily available in the supermarket. Thanks for raising this and hopefully my comments will be of help to other site visitors. Best, Frank Cooper, Naturopath
Thank you so much for that detailed help - I feel encouraged. Never thought of adding lecithin to my cooking or realized that it was taken out of cooking oils.
Thank you both for the helpful information.

I've only been taking the capsules for a short while. Once I have some results I will post it.
