Quite common situation with menopause Montell! We’ve had the “it’s all a part of growing up”, now we come to the “is all a part of growing up “! 😜

Hi Montell, I don't know whether this was explained to you when it was first prescribed for you, but fluoxetine, which is known as an SSRI drug, and in common with many other SSRI's, quite commonly causes a lack of libido, or more specifically the difficulty or even inability to orgasm. It's a side effect that's maybe glossed over as it's a difficult subject to discuss, but many people taking this medication do suffer this.I think that deciding to take it is a trade off, because you will often begin to feel much better in terms of your general wellbeing and mental health. You probably won't need to take fluoxetine forever either, so this is recoverable. But you should mention this to your medical professional as being troublesome to you and if you have a partner it's really important to be open with them and explain about this unfortunate side effect. It might be possible that a different SSRI or different dose would prevent or help this, so don't be embarrassed to speak out. Your doctor will know all about it.

Hi Montell, firstly you are not alone as had no idea how much of an effect the menopause was going to have on my life!I am also on an anti depressant,Sertraline. The worst things for me initially were the sweating,I could not go upstairs without getting sweaty!HRT has helped a fair bit but lose of libido, lack of motivation and concentration are worst for me.Life is so much of an effort just now,pre menopause I think I was fairly normal but now....how much longer til this is over! Not enough awareness around about how seriously a woman’s life can be effected, her families life too. There needs to be more public awareness of how much of an impact the menopause has on a woman, this website is a start.Take care.xx

Hi, I totally agree. There is not enough awareness of the impact of the menopause on women and their families. It also comes just as women are taking on the lions share of caring for elderly relatives. A perfect storm. There needs to be far more understanding in society.
