Advice please
Hello Fay 1988,
Welcome to our supportive community of carers and those cared for. In regards to your husband, before starting any exercise program, it is important that you get professional medical advice, not only from his GP and consultant, but also physiotherapist. It may help to ask for physio assessment and treatment plan first, as they can assess his pain levels, flexibility etc. and can put together a gentle exercise program (often based on Pilates) that will protect his back, not put a strain on the injury and suggest pain management techniques. Also, a course of hydrotherapy (warm water therapy) with the physio would help with his rehab. It's best not to rush into a general purpose exercise program, but to follow physio advice. It may help to speak to his doctor about better pain control medication, and possibly have a referral to a pain clinic. There are a lot of things he can do to improve his situation with the right kind of help and support. Pilates is highly recommended by physios but with both pilates or yoga, there different types some more gently than others, so best to research those.

Thank you very much we are going down all the routes you said just trying to find something not in a hospital we can enjoy together
Sorry to hear your husbands in pain - it does take time and he will improve.
Had my spinal fusion in lower back 5years ago - was on the couch for 2months before gradually getting it moving - still have the odd problem but know how to cope. Started with physio - getting the muscles in legs built up - doing exercises recommended by hospital and a good physio - Take Codeine Phosphate 30mg as and when required - only take them now when i play tennis! Surgeon recommended building up muscles in swimming pool - not to do breast stroke - so walked up and down 2-3 times a week (beating all the swimmers) and any exercises given - do them in the pool! Have a belt which i wear playing tennis can find them on Amazon and if out for long stint - Also have a slow release codeine tablet if i have the odd painful night- It does get better - bit of slow process to begin with .
also do pilates - the person taking the class was aware of my problem and would say don’t do this one until i built up core muscles - took me couple of years to get out of beginners class - now upgraded to intermediate ! there is a light at end of tunnel - wish your husband the very best - he will get there - just don’t give in
