Memory is a complex thing and there has been a lot of research into how memory functions, such as by encoding, storing and retrieving information that our senses process, or the types of memories e.g. autobiographical, flashbulb, false memories. We often think our memories are an accurate video recording of our life events, moments, storing everything that we see and think about. But in fact this isn't necessarily the case. But I think you are talking about 'False memories' and the pioneering of work by Elizabeth Loftus explains how these types of memories are formed. Here a link to some information, but if you do a Google search you and look on the more trusted psychology sites you will find more information about memory. It's a very interesting field of study!
