Hi i am 72 years old and till having a fall a couple of years ago thought i was reasonably fit, i have had a few falls which i put down to my arthritis. but i am now suffering from short term memory loss and sometime stood thinking of what i was going to do and maybe taking a few minutes for me to remember. as though i was vacant inside my head it has really got me wondering weather or not dementia is on its way. if i ask the wife she would think i was joking but would admit i am a bit woolly headed. is there any good help out here on the net

Welcome hbbc, I would say that your best source of help would be your GP. He could talk you through what’s happening to you, how you’re feeling and what to do.

Get checked out first and take things from there. Xxxxx

many thanks sassy59 i have

thought about the doctor but i think the self denial has put me back a fair bit not wanting to belive what is happening to me. I think my wife is noticing the difference in me, and the words (what are you doing ) are coming more often from my wife, again many thanks hbbc

Wishing you all the best. Xxxx

You need to get tested. If it is dementia, there is treatment that helps a lot but it needs to be started early, put your mind at rest and see your GP>

Hi, I have been diagnosed with Dementia 4/5 years ago and I say go to your GP and will be able to say, he will memory tests and you could see a specialist Nurse, go as soo as possible.

Hi hbbc. I see that you've just joined us and I wish you a warm welcome, but I guess you've arrived here whilst looking for some clues as to what might, or might not be wrong with you.

It's really important that you get your support from sites like this one, but that you get your help from a medical professional, i.e. your GP to start with. Never mind what your wife might be saying or thinking, make yourself an appointment and make some excuse as to why you are needing that, and don't invite her along further than the waiting room with you.

It might well be that you simply are just having more 'senior moments'. Not all memory loss is down to dementia but it's important to find out what you are, or are not up against.

When you've had that GP appointment, do come back and let us know how you are getting on.

We're always happy to give an opinion or share your worries, or joys, but always remember that helpful as the internet can be, it's awash with misinformation at times.

Get some proper advice and reassurance!

Very best wishes to both of you.

there are a number of things that can affect memory in the way you describe that aren't dementia, and even if it is dementia there are now a number of drugs that can slow the progression. You need to get a full assessment done which would include taking blood to rule out other conditions - such as thyroid, diabetes, anaemia, B12 and/or folate deficiency, vitamin D deficiency. Definitely go and see your GP

There are a number of times I've forgotten what the day is..where have I put my glasses..gone shopping to get an item..and still came home without it....it's called old age not dementia..until 2years ago I was still a motorcycle courier..a number of times I sort of lost my bearings while trying to find a destination..old age again...if you are worried they can do a dementia test for you...but as long as you know whose pm..the nearest airport railway station shopping centre etc then you are ok..as for falling that depends on weight..my wife has dodgy knees..and is about 19stone.....so if she feels herself going over she can't stop herself.....a question of balance....wooly headed!!!my wife thinks that off me all the time...the more you worry..the worse it will get
