Different hearing aids

Morning All.

I have had T for quite a while now and I am noticing that my family are getting annoyed with me because I can't hear and they are getting bored repeating most things.

So today I will be calling the doctor for a hearing test to get some help.

Because I have short hair my wife has said not get behind the ear aids but that seems to be all that is on offer, that is of any good.

Any advice or guidance on aid would be really helpful.

Hi Simon,

If you're looking for HA's from the NHS, the chances are the 'BTE' (Behind the Ear) will be all that they'll offer. They do the same job as the other ones, so I'm wondering what's on your mind in this regard or your wife's mind for that matter. If it's just from as aesthetics perspective, BTE aids are more obvious that the teensy little ones that you can have in your ear - however, they may not be suitable for your hearing impairment.

Regarding the aesthetics of them, I was reluctant to start wearing HA's to start with, but I soon got over it. If you look around, you'll soon start noticing that there are lots of people who wear HA's, but you don't really see them unless you look for them. I came to the realisation that it's much the same as wearing glasses - if your eyes don't work as well as you'd want them to, you wear spectacles, if you ears don't work, you wear HA's - there's no difference.

If you do have a hearing impairment and tinnitus, then absolutely, you need to wear HA's. You won't regret it.

Like you I have short hair though I have also none on top. I wear hearing aids that show behind the ear but so what. You won’t be alone in that respect and it’s help for your hearing loss and not your wife. Hopefully you’ll get similar to me and have hearing aids with masking sounds fitted so this helps to dim the tinnitus sounds. Main thing to do is to keep yourself busy to distract yourself from tinnitus sounds and you’ll be doing yourself a favour as the regular exercise can be good for you too. Also get apps like Sound Oasis and Chillax on your phone as these are free. I find these useful at night in bed when the hearing aids are not worn. Good luck!

Your family get annoyed? Wow ask them to have tinnitus.

Concentrate on you my friend & if I took your tinnitus away now with a magic wand but put a red star on your forehead I’m sure you’d take the star.. don’t worry about the looks stay happy & live well...

Let people be understanding if you can’t fix them fix you, it’s you living with it be a bit selfish here your not asking much from anyone.
