Feeling good with Bronchiectasis

Hi I first went to my GP with acid reflux 5years ago and from there I was diagnosed via CT scans etc to have Bronchiectasis. I was taking omeprazole but refused to take it regular . I worked out what foods were causing reflux and elicited them from my diet. So no longer required them. I have suffered over the years with infections, until researching exercise and lung conditions and now I would say I'm as fit and healthy as anyone without a lung condition. It was slow and very hard at first but now I ride my bike most days I hike kayake paddle board and walk my dog. I am currently doing 100-200 squats a day along with other exercise. I thought I can sit here and let this condition take over me or I can take over this condition. I have not had a infection for 2 years and just asked to be discharged from the hospital. I take no medication now.My recent scan still identifies the bronchiectasis along with other things but I will fight to remain fit for as long as I can. Not saying it was easy but its definitely worth it.

I just wanted people to see there is hope, the sooner you work on your body the quicker you can stop any more damage from happening. Good luck and don't over do things, gradually build up your stamina. X

That's fantastic. I haven't been quite as sporty as you, but taking action on a healthy diet - cutting out saturated fats and sugar - and walking as much and as far as possible seems to do the trick. It has meant acid reflux, whilst it still happens after eating, is not as bad and I don't like taking omeprazole either so I also stopped it. If I get reflux that makes me cough, I take Gaviscon or cheaper supermarket equivalent. My exercise includes an hours walk a day, gardening, volunteering at a local allotment and online pilates or yoga. I find outdoor activities, and indoor exercises clears my lungs. Losing weight has also helped, along with muscle strength from the exercise. As we are allowed more freedom from Lockdown, I hope to do more and further walking in the countryside.

Thats excellent , pleased to hear you are keeping yourself active keep up the good work. Can I ask you about your re flux please, I suffered bad with ref;ux back when I was first diagnosed with Bronchiectasis, ive not really had many issues with it since (Or was explained how, what or why I had it in the first place, it was forgotten about). but I had a scare while at work the other day and font really know what happened. I was eating and then got a very sharp pain in my back...well more my upper right side of my back, the pain was unbearable and I doubled up...felt like lots of bubbles/phlegm were stuck the other staff member had to bang my back to try and eliviate the pains.. it did help but was very embarrassing. Is that reflux I will be reluctant to eat now at work but I work long shifts 12-24hr.

Hi there. It sounds like indigestion. Reflux is usually a burning sensation in your throat, behind your breast bone maybe and makes you cough a lot. The Consultant has asked me to take Omeprazole again so there's no risk of the acid going into my lungs. I have complied. It may be that you are more sensitive to certain foods but I'm not an expert. Try easy to digest foods while at work- usually bland but look them up.
