Diabetes type 3c post transplant.....has anyone else had this diagnosis?

Just wondering if anyone else out here has had this diagnosis? My husband has been diagnosed this week, his pancreas is now barely functioning at all, so mimicking Type 1. Care has been quite slow, as it seems quite rare, not often seen by GP, likewise patients with Liver Transplant! They always seem quite nervous with his care.Anyway, he's now being referred to secondary care at the hospital so we are feeling positive there will be improvement in the management of his blood sugars.

Needless to say, we are still thankful at the chance of life his donor gave him, we are heading towards the first anniversary and although recovery has been slow and challenging, we still get moments of joy when he achieves things he just couldnt do a year ago.

Xx

Hi Ewife, my pal was diagnosed with type 3c about 3 years ago. although he hasn’t had a transplant. His cirrhosis was caused by alcohol (4 years sober) and he had multiple episodes of pancreatitis when still an active drinker.

His bloods are now stable after some trial and error with his insulin but it took a while as he could very quickly go into a hypo. That hasn’t happened for about 8 months now. My only advice would be to keep testing his blood sugars while the diabetic team sort out the correct dosage for him x

Thank you. We've been given the impression it might be a bumpy ride getting the insulin dose correct. He's been on slow release insulin since transplant, but we didnt realise they were so high again. Leeds flagged up that his hba1c had risen, and GP tested, theyd risen again. He's always been too high to worry about lows - so that will be a new thing to manage.

Take care, and thanks for your time.

Hello and yes your husbands diabetes sounds like mine was after my transplant ..I wasn't diabetic before transplant ...I came out of hospital armed with a insulin pens ..needles...and the correct amount of insulin to take in ml...when I got home ..the nightmare began ..I ran out of the needles ..I had a battle with the GP surgery..to get some more ..I had to boil the used needles for the day ..to use again ...my blood sugers were going very high ..I was shaking ..I was contacting the hospital who was dropping my insulin ..the reading was going all over the place ..I couldn't control my Pancras..it went so low once I had to get some apple juice before I collapsed ...the Dr's diabetic nurse was too hard to reach ...I couldn't believe the after care you get from the GP s diabetic department...so in the end I contacted the top diabetic department at my local hospital ..who came to my GP surgery and put me on a diabetic tablet ...since then I've been great ...3 years after transplant ..I think your Pancras gets a good bashing but tell your husband it's does calm down ..when your taken off the insulin pens ...and put on a tablet ..he's most probably still on a high dose at the moment ..so the pens are good for that..but when it settles down to 10mg ..there is a wonderfull tablet out there that does the trick ..it's part and parcel of having a transplant I suppose your body takes a big knock but it does all settle down and you are put on alot of what I call maintenance tablets to keep us going ...

Thank you for replying. Can you remember how long it took to settle down?

About 8 months when I came of the pen ..onto the tablet ..things settled nicely ...

Hello Ewife,

(I hadn't heard of diabetes 3c until I read your post).

I found this Diabetes UK really informative:

diabetes.org.uk/about-diabe...

The article emphasises that: "There isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment because it really comes down to how much damage your pancreas has. And you may benefit from more regular reviews by your healthcare team."

Hoping it won't be too long before your Husband's body settles / his healthcare team has helped to fine-tune his personalised 3c treatment and ongoing management.

With best wishes.
