Extreme Pigmented Skin on Face, Feeling Cold....

July 2024 my husband went through a detox in hospital. He became seriously ill suffering from Delirium Tremens.

He has end stage liver disease - has stopped drinking.

Cut a long story short he is always extremely cold even with a hot water bottle he is so cold to touch.

His skin on his face has turned very dark and spreading down. He cant look in the mirror.

Between the doctors and hepatology they have prescribed one iron tablet a day.

His skin and feeling cold is since his hospital admission.

He is also swollen but hepatology say, 'Bloods within normal Range'

Something is not right, he cant even put his socks on... he is always in pain.

Also, his pillow stains during the night - almost as if something is seeping out of his head throughout the night.

Very grateful for advice please.

So worried...

Hi, I’m not an expert on the detox side of things, but I do know that feeling cold all the time is part of end stage liver disease. My mum used to have her house like a sauna and wore layers of clothes but still felt cold. She was also very swollen and her legs leaked. This was due to oedema. Moisturising helped and it did stop. I think it’s worth getting a GP appointment and seeing be if you can get support from the community nurses. You might also want to call the BLT helpline. Their nurses are fantastic.

Crimsoon, Who is taking care of you ? I know the stigma, sometimes involved here and because os ppls attitude, it can be doubly lonely and isolating and worse, because of alcoholic 'behaviours', it can be alienating of both sets of friends, It is a terrible disease! And horrific in its end. Of course, you know all this, I pray, tho, you have a few around you, who are good and true! It is horrible to see and there is no-one there to whom you can speak. A single Iron tablet, seems small, but of course, it depends on how large it is? I conjecture, his system cannot take more? A few years ago, I had a blood disorder and was given regular iron-enriched transfusions, thho I think that maybe, too much for him. I am sure this has been going through your mind, I wish him pain free peace, and you, respite from this punishing routine. As Readlots said " The BLT helpline. Their nurses are fantastic" I now have cancer, spread to liver and lungs and cant attest to specialist nurses being wonderful as can general nurses. There must, too, be a few forums you can reach out to! I pray you can be comforted by the good memories! It is dark now, but, soon it will be light!

Dear Crimsoon,

If you would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday 9am to 3pm and Tuesday to Friday 9am to 4pm on 0800 652 7330 excluding bank holidays.

We also facilitate a range of virtual support groups for people in the UK living with a liver condition (and their families and carers). If you would find it helpful to speak to others with shared experience, you can register to join a group here:
