Constipation

Morning all, Could anyone confirm if severe constipation is a symptom of cirrhosis please? As time has gone by I seem to be getting more and more constipated and even Senna laxatives are not working.

Regards

Hi 👋 livinglife, yes I've been in your shoes, it's not nice to have that i told my hepatologist about it and he prescribed Lactulose to take as it helps also to remove the toxin build up yo the brain that can be caused by constant regular constipation. It is very sweet in taste, not very nice but did the trick I pw have that as one of my regular prescribed medications. Best wishes linda

Yes it is, can lead to hepatic encephalopathy, so discuss with your specialist about upping your laxatives.

Hi livinglif123, I also take senna and lactulose. Some brands have a more pleasant flavor than others. Lactulose is cheaper online. Another thing that helps me a lot is sipping over the day, the water from 5/6 dried plums left to soak overnight. It's delicious and works miracles. Plums should also be eaten but it works even with water only. It's a natural, healthy and effective method.

Fruit and vegetables instead of sweets. Water. Moviment. Zero cocoa.

Hi! Did you try this? I drink this during the day almost every day and it works really well. No need to take chemical stuff. (Only lactulose for ammonia)

Tinned prunes with porridge are really good.

I swear by apricots. Cut up in porridge.

I was initially on Senna and Lactulose but never really worked for me and even, I believe, got Hernia due to putting to much effort in, When this happened I stayed on Senna but also started Laxido which has really helped for me and now a good few months later still really helps I take 1 sachet at night and 1 in the morning.

This should be able to get from your GP.

Thank you , can you buy Laxido over the counter and I presume this was okayed by the liver specialist to take on a regular basis? I'm always worried about taking extra things 🙈

I'm not sure if available over the counter it was prescribed by my GP and I'm fortunate to live in Scotland, but fair point on Liver issues, I will send an email this week to my consultant and asked the question you raised and try and get back to you next week, or try contacting your local Consultant or if the administrator of this site could forward your query to the Liver nurses?

Absolutely as per other replies my hubby was given prescription for lactulose as a matter of priority as this is essential for preventing toxin build up it's very individual as he was told he must have 2 sachets 3 x a day but it meant he was going all the time so he basically stuck with it but only took it as needed and most days only 1 sachet in the morning and sometimes evening was enough.

I hope you have success and stay strong

Best wishes
