No, not unless they bleed. Varices are listed in the compensated symptoms. In a stages of cirrhosis thing I once found it says:-

Stage 1 - no varices, no ascites (compensated)

Stage 2 - varices, no ascites (compensated)

Stage 3 - ascites, +/- varices (decompensated)

Stage 4 - bleeding varices, +/- ascites (decompensated).

Hi Katie,I am quite new on this forum but I have noticed that you seem to know a lot about cirrhosis. Do you also know about any other liver diseases, symptoms and if yes could you please have a look at my recent post and let me know what you think please, maybe some advice? I would be very thankful.

Regards

No, varices are a side effect of the scarring, which will always remain. You still have enough working cells in the Liver to carry out its functions.

Hi. I have seen your previous posts and how this has worried and troubled you for quite a few years. And no wonder, hearing the words fibrosis, cirrhosis, varices etc are all scary words and the human tendency is to think the worst. I have varices. Your consultant, if you are being engulfed with anxiety, should get you a gastroscope…that will tell you the grade of the varices you have and the likelihood of them worsening. The mention of liver disease terrifies most people, there is no magic cure for that except for your good self to try and do everything you can to keep your liver as healthy as possible and not allow the overwhelmed medical community to neglect you. If you have a faith, use it as that’s what a belief is there for, not just in trying times but in good times too. If not, there are a thousand relaxation therapies out there, not all work but you may find the one for you. Moderate exercise which doesnt stress your liver helps too, my own choice is swimming and walking the dog. Truly hope your symptoms, and issues dissipate with time and care and you look forward to a more healthy and optimistic future.
