I am 60 years old. I have had cysts on my liver for many years. Recently discovered that one of them grew from 6.4 cm last year to 7.8 this year. I learned this because I had to have a CT scan and bloodwork due to extreme pain, just under my right rib. The pain is very localized to one spot and has been there for four days now with no let up. Is this common to have pain from liver cysts? I have no other symptoms, but the pain is somewhat debilitating as it hurts to breathe, move, or do anything. The pain feels like I might rupture something if I am not careful. Very twisting stabbing type of pain. Has anyone else experienced this?
they thought I might have pancreatitis or gastritis, but I’m not sick in any other way and the test all came back negative.

I have liver cysts and it depends a bit on what has caused them as to the seriousness of symptoms. I have all the historical marker to suggest hydrated cysts and if they ruptured the consequences can be dangerous. Are yours septated?
We suggest going back to your own doctor or health care professional if the pain continues and if the pain worsens and you are in the UK we would encourage you to use NHS 111. They can direct you to the best place to get help if you cannot contact your GP during the day, or when your GP is closed (out of hours).
If you are in the UK and would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday 9am to 3pm and Tuesday to Friday 9am to 4pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)
Hi Lisa. I was 1st diagnosed liver cyst 10years ago. Beginning this year symptoms began and increased until so painful and debilitated ended up in hospital last week. Largest cyst atc24cm was blocking sight of others and literally impacting all other organs. Cross with myself for letting medicals fobb me off for so long. Hospital protocol was, ' we've drained 2/3rds fluid out so just go home and wait for it to happen again!!!!! Not in my nature but knew just cant carry on like this so I argued how ridiculous this was in everyone, not least financial cost to nhs, and am now seeing surgeon next week for full removal. We should never let ourselves go through the things we do. See your Dr again, if you have begun to experience symptoms it won't improve without intervention. If you need to exaggerate pain but don't accept, wait and see, you deserve better. Keep going back, keep complaining until they help you. Good luck, Judith x
thank you for sharing your story. My cyst is 7.8cmx7.4 and I’m still not sure if that was the cause of my pain or if it was pancreatitis (which I’ve never had before). Such intense pain! Hurt to breathe deeply, move etc. can you describe the pain you felt from yours?
You should be able to have educated guess depending on where pain originated. I.e. left of abdomen = pancreas and right = liver so, that indicates source if problem. I had general dull ache radiating throughout abdomen but beginning in right side.
As symptoms increased I also got sharp pain in liver area.
As cysts took over other symptoms inc breathlessness, lack of appetite but weight gain, bladder and bowels problems, mobility decreased inc driving, stomach bloated and distended to near popping, headaches, lack of sleep, gum disease. This is why I urge you to not let yourself be left to 'wait and see'. Jx
I'm the same! It feels like a stitch just below my right rib.
Some days I can be without painkillers, but the pain is still there. Twice the pain has been so intense I've visited A&E. I'be had this for 2 weeks now.
I have multiple cysts. Two of them are 8 & 9cm. NHS said no further intervention. I'm scared of them bursting & scared about travelling for work / being in a meeting when the pain gets bad.
I've got another appt in the new year & I'm going armed with a list of questions, I'll share results on here.
