Help! Sudden Eczema!

HelloCan I ask if anyone has developed eczema with liver cirrhosis? Over the past few weeks I have developed it all over my torso and it's so uncomfortable. The soreness/stinging and itching is outrageous! I'm getting very little sleep and feel rather ill with it.

I have tried Epimax, E45 itch cream, coconut oil, Clotrimazole, Aveno with oatmeal lotion, and a prescribed body wash, all of which can work temporarily but need constant re-application. I still take Colestyramine for subcutaneous itching which I already had.

Is there any advice you kind people can offer to help relieve my symptoms?

Thanks

Cecelia

Thank you, sorry to hear what you are going through.I have seen the GP and hospital about it but feel that, as you suggest, a dermatologist is needed now pretty urgently. I was hoping for light treatment as I heard that helps. As you know it affects all of life, day and night.

Thank you for replying, I hope you feel better soon

Best wishes

So sorry for what you are going through. I don't have cirrhosis but had a Liver transplant in 2006. First noticed eczema on my ankle about a year ago. Saw a trainee GP who prescribed hydrocortisone for a couple of weeks. It stopped the itching but once the course was over the eczema came back. Then got Betnovate which was much more effective but GP did not want to give me more and instead prescribed Dermol Lotion bodywash. Supposed to use it 4 times a day but twice a day is about as much as I can remember putting on. It just about keeps the itching but not the redness at bay. I now buy hydrocortisone and use that when the flaking gets too much. At one point the itching was too much and I had a good old scratch. I got an infection and ended up in hospital for a week on IV anti biotic followed by 10 days of oral anti biotic. Not to be recommended. If your GP will give it Betnovate was the best treatment I had. Good luck and keep your finger nails short and clean.

Thank you both so much. I cut my nails yesterday so I can't scratch so easily.I am sorry you are both going through this too - as you know it is torture and the last thing I want is infections. That sounds awful Peter.

Thanks for reminding me of Betnovate! I was trying to remember what this was called as I remember my Mum using it on her cracked hands! I'll ask about that.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply to me. Fingers crossed I can (we all can!) get some relief

All the best

Been suffering from psoriasis for approx 4 year and at worst covered 40% of my body

Used and still using diprosalic from the Dr which help to control the condition. UV treatment can work but for me, after 6 months, I gave it up as it became so painful and I turned to painkillers and drink to cope.

Strange thing is that in 2024 was diagnosed with Cirrhosis. Put on many pills and signed off work for 6 weeks and at the end of the 6 weeks my psoriasis has gone.

Coming back now but trying to control with diprosalic, baths with oils, salts and porridge oats (place in a sock). Also trying meditation and attend regular self help groups for both psoriasis and cirrhosis.

Was also recommended trying baths with rooibos tea. Not tried this yet 😉

Please excuse the attempt at humour: when diagnosed with gall stones, a doctor said I should follow a low fat diet. I think I took it to an extreme by eliminating milk from my cups of tea. I tried drinking rooibos but could not get on with it and ending up throwing it away. Maybe I should have tried bathing in it because I didn't think it was made for drinking.

Hello S0brietyThank you for your reply - so sorry to hear of your various issues. Having never had skin issues in the past, I have new found sympathy for those who suffer with it. Psychologically as well as discomfort & pain makes it almost intolerable. Last night yet again I only got 3 hours maximum because of the itching.. It can't go on or I'll go mad!

I'll take on your recommendations where I can. Thanks so much for the support. It means a lot.

You have my sympathy, I know just how you feel, I keep getting nasty psoriasis flare ups. One thing I have found really helps is hemp moisturiser. Be careful around broken or open skin, but it really soothes the itching. I use hemp oil body lotion made by Dr Organic. Obviously, check with your GP first and please don't consider this as anything more than my experience, it may not suit you.

Quick update in case it is of any interest! It turns out I have something called pityriasis rosea, which is apparently a temporary condition. I'm told it usually clears up within 10 weeks and having taken on some suggestions here, it already seems to have become milder so thank you all so much.I'm told it rarely returns so fingers crossed! No idea what causes it but seems it is related to the herpes virus in some way.

All the best to all!
