just read that a study shows that taking omeprazoleon a regular basis may be linked to an increase of beta-amyloid in the brain which can lead to dementia.
This was (I believe) an American study and as such may well be dismissed out of hand by UK health professionals, But why??( surely it isn't just about ego)
So my question is has anyone else heard of this?

Yes. I read this. I have stopped taking it until I know more. My consultant originally put me on a 40 day course, then one of the pharmacists at my health centre put me on it full-time. So I'm not concerned about stopping it (I have a small hernia apparently).
Yes I've heard this. Also can affect bones because of lack of stomach acid. I personally wouldn't take it for long. I weaned myself off it slowly by using antacids from chemist. Started eating more healthier and now I'm fine.
"Omeprazole is not banned in the United States, but the FDA has advised against it as an over-the-counter drug. Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) that is used to treat a variety of gastric acid-related disorders, including: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Peptic ulcer disease, and Uncomplicated heartburn. Omeprazole is available as a generic medication and is also available without a prescription in the United States. In 2022, it was the ninth most commonly prescribed medication in the United States.
While PPIs are commonly prescribed in the U.S., there are alternative options available, such as lifestyle modifications, alternative therapies, and other medications."
My hubby has been on it since April 2012 and remains so post transplant as a stomach protector from his steroids.
