It really depends on the extent of the irritation and or damage done to your oesophagus by your stomach acid. Whilst omeprazole works quickly to inhibit excess acid, resolving the tenderness and inflammation make take weeks. Definitely worth asking for a gastroenterologist referral if your symptoms persist but most people have a straightforward and happy result with PPIs, the right diet and a healthy BMI. As you've come through to The British Liver Trust page you may find the acid reflux forum more helpful. Though everyone is welcome here.

They normally work within a couple of hours to subdue bouts of acid reflux, I was advised to take them daily 20mg, however because I have B12 problems I only take them when I get bad bouts attacks of acid reflux, they are meant to cause vitamin B12 deficiency when then are taken over a long period of time, and I've had numerous problems with my stomach over the years, I used to take them daily, but, I know longer take them on a regular basis, of course your doctor has prescribed them for your own reasons, so follow the advice, hopefully the scope will give you a better idea what's going on, best of luck, Chris

Occasionally my GERD symptoms flare up. So, this time I decided to try Prilosec, and I feel Prilosec has worked better for me than the medication prescribed by my doctor. Within three days, my stomach swelling went down, and I was able to digest my food much better. I will use Prilosec from now on.
