Hi all. I have a fatty liver caused by drinking too much which I'm on the mend from. However I also have extremely high cholesterol, which doctor wants to prescribe statins for, but I'm concerned about my liver and making that worse. Has anyone gone through the same combination of that problem and if so any advice? The dreaded Google has conflicting advise as does the NHS

Statins and fatty liver
Hi Startingmyjourney, I have cirrhosis and was diabetic for many years I am now a controlled diabetic and have not been on medication for over two years. I also had high cholesterol and am on a statin. I no longer have high cholesterol but my cardiologist and hepatologist both do not want me to get off the statin. They say it helps with inflammation of the liver.
I would recommend you talk with a hepatologist.
Hello,
My husband has cirrhosis and his gastroenterologist prescribed a statin. Statins can cause issues with the liver but only in a small number of patients and his gastro felt that the benefits far outweighed the risk.
@Crestor statin raised my liver enzymes and caused excruciating fatigue that built up over the 7 months I was on it. I now got prescribed Repatha after 6 months of no treatment during which liver enzymes returned to normal. I am now left with 10 pounds of additional weight that refuses to come off belly, been told it's not ascites but how can you be sure. LDL is now 39, used to be over 150 and I have high calcium in widow maker coronary artery hence the need to treat. I am taking vit D3 and K2 also to help move calcium from veins into bones, supposed to help.
Statins are not contraindicated for liver disease and I have just started taking them.
I was on statins for a couple of years ..tried atorvastatin, rosuvastatin and Ezetimibe … my liver ALT was not good and I could not stand the muscle problems they gave me …I’m now on Praluent injections and feel so much better, my liver score is doing well and I’m feeling generally better. I’m hoping in time this have a positive effect on my fatty liver .
There is a lot of research showing that statins are anti-fibrotic. I have been taking a low dose avortastatin for a few years. No side effects. Good for reducing potential portal hypertension (from what I have read).
