At the beginning of the year I was diagnosed with NAFLD by ultrasound after routine blood tests showed high liver enzymes. I have also just been told I have high cholesterol too - awaiting an appointment with my GP to discuss this.
I just wondered what’s others experiences of this is and what things you can do to help? I’ve lost 2 and a half stone in weight yet my lft’s are all still increasing (even when having 2 lots of bloods just a month apart) I’ve never drunk alcohol or smoked, and even my GP said my diets balanced and healthy when I went through it with her and nothing really she could suggest I need to cut back on. I exercise for a minimum 30 mins a day (this is hard as I suffer from chronic fatigue but I do as much as I can). Any other personal experiences of this would be good to hear - I’m only 32 and feel so alone with this!
If you are in the UK and would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).
We also run a MASLD (NAFLD) virtual support group - if you are in the UK and would find it helpful to speak to others with shared experience, you can register to join a group here:
Hello Hidden - you’re not alone here, we’re all going through (or have faced) similar stuff and it’s a great place to vent, share and generally get support and info/questions that can help your next appts with Doctors. So keep posting!
Reading other people’s stories and old answers to posts helped me too.
And, good on you for losing so much weight, I’m doing the same and it isn’t always easy!
I’ve certainly found all this liver stuff a long road but looking back it’s been quite methodical. Understanding the process helped me a bit too. Although i’m not through it yet either.
My circumstances are different to yours but just to share, my US showed NAFLD. Bloods were slightly elevated once then normal. I have chronic fatigue and upper abdominal/generalised pain too so was then sent for a Fibroscan. That confirmed cirrhosis but not the cause. Could be weight but maybe also autoimmune disease as I already have under active thyroid/psorosis. More bloods on order for that now…so more waiting!
Whatever the cause of the liver damage though I am doing what I can to help now.
I’ve come off all medication that’s not essential - agreed with GP - and don’t take any over the counter stuff just now either. I’ve lost weight, changed my diet and started to exercise more. I’m not diabetic but started to use a blood glucose monitor to help avoid blood sugar spikes - was told fatty liver is driven by poor blood sugar/insulin regulation? And consultant said to drink 3-4 cups of good quality coffee a day - has a really positive impact on the liver but they don’t know why. I’ve also massively reduced the complexity and stress in my life for a bit and tried to get into a better quality sleep pattern.
The one bit of advice I’d offer though is to phone the British Liver Trust helpline. They helped me understand what was happening and what questions to ask next. They were kind and supportive too - absolute angels…
Hope you get some answers soon…sending you a virtual hug meantime…hang in there
