6 month ultrasound

Hi,

I had my first 6 month ultrasound 5 weeks ago and was told by the radiologist that I would hear about the result within 3 weeks. I haven't heard anything, should I contact the liver department or just assume nothing of concern was identified.

hi, I think if there was anything they were worried about, you would have heard, however I would call them and chase it up as I understand that the full reports can take a while.

i am always told after the scan. by ultrasound i presume you mean fibroscan?

No he is referring to his 6 monthly monitoring ultrasound which cirrhosis patients have to check for changes in the liver.

The results arn't available there and then as the image needs to be looked at and reported on by radiology doctor.

It is very unlike fibroscan which is just a set of numbers which can be reported immediately.

Hi You can always contact your Gastroenterologist Department for your results but if there was any concerns they would have contacted you earlier. Hope all goes well. Nip1

Hello,

I think if there were any concerns you would have heard, although waiting is never easy, even with nothing significant to report.

I have 6 monthly scan alongside blood tests and was told I would have a “virtual” appointment afterwards. Not quite knowing what that meant I waited and waited. In the end chased consultants secretary and received a letter (that was the virtual appointment), but I did need to phone to chase it up.

I suppose different hospitals have different systems, but a phone call might be worthwhile. It’s difficult to know what to expect especially as this is your first 6 monthly ultrasound. I hope you hear soon.

Thanks everyone, I am due a follow soon as they took me offence spirolactone as it was causing pain, the nurse said the ascites was slight even at its worst last year and so far there doesn't appear to be any physical difference but we will find out then and I am sure I will get the ultrasound results then. Due for the follow up this month so we will see then. Thanks again everyone I hope you are keeping well and staying positive

You probably will get your ultrasound result at this follow up appointment BUT I would ask if you can get sent a print out of your scan reports in future - such things are handy if you are applying for benefits plus for your own interest. I developed a good rapport (via email) with hubbies previous consultant's secretary and she would send us the reports either by post or email.

Radiology have to do the report and submit it to your consultant for his/her evaluation before they feed back results to you.

In my experience the radiologists are pretty accurate about their timescales, although obviously things can get delayed if people go off sick. However the report will go to the liver consultant who will then report back to you.

Since you have a follow up this month it probably makes sense to wait for that rather than chasing. But I would never assume that hearing nothing equals nothing to report. Besides, even if there is nothing of concern you should be told that.
