finally something positive

hey everyone

Hope you’re all as well as can be?

we’ve just had mums liver check up; and the nurse was openly in awe of how much of an improvement she has made.

not going to lie, I’m a little bit emosh and overwhelmed as I was mentally prepared for a very different conversation but I wanted to share it all below for any input/ ideas of how to continue to drive her forward.

firstly she’s lost another 5kg in 8 weeks, total weight loss now is over 30kg! She is now 6 months without a drink, and doing so well with it! Her mobility has slightly improved, she is now able to move from her chair and to the bathroom as needed, even if it causes her great pain.

Due to the weight loss, the nurse managed to get some fibrosis readings for the first time ever. They couldn’t get a stiffness score (more weight loss needed first) but the fatty scores averaged at 320 - I think that looks quite high but that’s to be expected?

her CT scan showed asities still around her belly, and some fluid on the lungs (pulmory something or other). It also showed evidence of coloniry artery disease, and her blood pressure is low so they are starting her on some medication (tbc) to treat. They also agreed to start her on rifoxmin (thanks to everyone here for that) to support the HE symptoms, as well as increasing her dose of lactulose to the max.

All bloods seem stable; she wouldn’t openly give me the numbers but she did pull me aside when mum went to the loo to compliment just how much better she is looking at that the eating and fluids are clearly really helping.

I cannot thank you all enough for your help so far. Even better? She said we are now talking about maybe even having years, rather than months, which really is magical.

Mum even found the strength after to go into Tesco, using a trolley for support, for the first time IN THREE YEARS to get my dad a little chocolate bar and herself some fruit. She’s exhausted now and resting but the point is? She did it!!!

That’s fantastic news. She’s doing all the things that should help…and they obviously are. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the liver takes time to recover….and 6 months without alcohol isn’t really all that long for the effects to be seen, so it’s really great that there’s been so much noticeable improvement.

It’s a bit of a “wow” read this even though there’s obviously more still work to be done. Hats off to your mum - and to you all as the supporting family. Here’s hoping the improvement continues, no matter how small. Keep us posted.
