Hi there

It’s me again the wife of the newly diagnosed non alcoholic liver cirrhosis.

We have been told that the ascities can re-occur which it has airways in one week Does it ever stop or will this be something that will happen

Does anyone else have this and if so how often do you get it drained What medications are you on and did they give you a treatment plan of having regular bloods etc

Thank you everyone 🦥

Hi. So sorry for the situation that your poor hubby and yourself find yourselves in. Recurring ascites is very common, especially at this early stage of your hubbies treatment. In my early days when being drained the ascites came back nearly as quick as they could drain it. Some of my fellow patients were drained weekly, and living quite well with that. So please don’t worry about any recurrence. You mentioned MOF in your last post. If the kidneys are impaired at the moment the diuretic treatments like Spironolactone or Ferusomide will not be considered until there is improvement in kidney function. If you are still in hospital it’s important that you insist on a care package for hubbie before they allow him home as coping on your own while earning a living will impact severely on your own health too. This is very early stages for you both and it will be a difficult recovery, but one I hope your husband will get. Take care.

Hi there thank you for your reply. This has made me feel a little easier. I knew that his ascities would come back but wasn’t expecting it this quick.

My nursing head has gone out the window at the moment. My brain is mush which makes it worse.

His real function is improving so the liver nods will no doubt be restarting the spiro soon. He was on 100mg on discharge but obviously needs more.

So I’m theory when he’s back on it it should help when they get the right combination.

Thank you so much for helping.

What I find frustration is that no one knows what has caused the liver to fail or what has caused the sepsis.

Thank you again xx

Hi Snips71,

My hubby diuretic therapy is 100mg Spironolactone and has had up to 40mg Furosemide, his kidneys dislike the therapy so has regular U & E blood tests to keep a check on kidney function, in the early days he had a total of 3 paracentesis & has since been managed with the above medications, hes currently off furosemide due to sodium level dropping and is on 1.5 litre/day fluid restriction.

Take care

K xx

Hi K. Thank you it’s good to hear that it can be controlled when they get the right dosages.

He was on 100mg off spiro on discharge but looks like it needs tweaking.

I hope that you are ok and thank you again for replying xx

My Mum was drained three times. They wouldn’t do it unless her abdomen was full enough so the time between drains varied. They also put her on a no salt low fluid diet to try and reduce the build up of ascites. That was quite tough but we had a referral to the dietician and their support was invaluable. Spiranalactone helped for a while until she became too poorly.

Hello,

I was diagnosed in 2015, just this April Ascites started. I have weekly drains now. I also had a bout with meds and kidney numbers.

I am on 200 mg spirolactone and 40 mg furosemide daily at this point. I want to back off those meds but unable to because is Ascites.

I am scheduled for a Tips procedure in September but I am still not 100% positive it is what I want or need. Good luck with your husband, I will say a prayer for both of you.
