How strict are you diet wise living with liver disease?

Does anyone have a flexible approach so you still get some ‘enjoyment’ out of food, or do you make sure that every meal is as healthy as can be?

Totally depends on the stage and cause of your condition. Diet for a malnourished cirrhosis patient is like weight watchers in reverse.

I was at the start of cirrhosis diagnosis, I had to be , I needed nutrients and plenty of protein As I have gone on in time, (13 years now ) I'm not so strict .I still have very low salt diet, no alcohol but im more relaxed now .

I don't Eat red meat, or white potatoes as I prefer chicken and sweet potato, I do at times make my own curries and chilli pasta bake etc.. but I am a bugger for chocolate and haribo lol 😆

Is it fair to say nutrition becomes less of n issue if the culprit is alcohol and your weight is normal?

If the culprit is alcohol chances are there is some degree of fatty liver therefore it is important to eat well even if alcohol is the cause. Don't want to get rid of the booze and still give yourself the non alcohol version of fatty liver.

Diet and liver disease totally depends on the stage of liver disease as well as underlying cause. Always best to get individualised dietary advice based on your personal circumstances.

You wouldn't believed what you are 'allowed' or 'advised' to eat say in late stage with malnourishments - everything you've basically been told to cut down on is a must to actually eat. We thought hubby was going to get told off when dietician went through her list - do you like cake? do you like this, do you like that. At the end of which she said "good we want you eating more of that!" This advice wouldn't be the same for someone say with fatty liver disease and diabetes.

I have never been told by my consultant are my doctor about dieting I'm early stage cirrhosis and they have never mentioned it only what I have read on here other people's stories I'm near 9 months sober apart from 3 beers I had the other week but lucky enough I caught myself on and through the 4th down the sink but when I spoke to my doctor about it at the start of my diagnosis because I was losing weight mostly with not eating and worrying about my diagnosis I even paid for my funeral that's how upset I was I said to the doctor I cant even have a Chinese he said who said that I said I read it he told me to stop over reacting and get a Chinese I laughed for the first time since my diagnosis and I havnt looked back since I accept it luckily I'm still working 12 hour shifts and haven't any symptoms scan and all my blood results all came back good but I'm addicted to haribo fizzys now lol but as someone else says its probably what stage your at sorry for long message reading your message brought back my day at the docs he made me look on the bright side of thing theres a lot more people worse of my main thing is to not drink harder than it sounds goodluck sorry for the long reply take care

I was so strict when I was first diagnosed with decompensated! I would eat what they told me I should and avoided what I shouldn’t. Now I am nearly 2 yrs done the line bloods have been continuously stable and I’m now compensated so I been more relaxed. I still have very little salt and eat my vegetables by the bucket load and only white meat. My downside is biscuits and redbull which is so bad x
