I was on azaphoprine for Ulterative colitis for 8 years but this medication caused liver cirrhosis!! After several months of trying different steroids I am now on Adalimumab injections which seem to be working but I’ve only been on them for a month. Anyway, I had my one month blood test and my blood platelets are lower again 104! Whilst I was taking off azaphoprine they started climbing to 115 (normal 140 - 400).
Do you think the Adalimumab are causing the blood platelets to fall again? The liver results seem ok. I will contact my consultants secretary today see if he gets back to me.
Any advice will be appreciated.

104 is still ok, I have chronic low platelet count due to being diagnosed with Chronic ITP, which is basically low platelet count. it mainly only becomes a problem clinically when the numbers are around 20- 50 I think.
its possible medications could be affecting it as simple things like paracetamol and neurofen for prolonged times i noticed affected mine unless it was just coincidence.
You may want to query with GP about being referred to a haematologist if the low platelet count is continuous. mine is normally between 80 - 112 on average and the haematologist says its ok unless it goes below 50
Low platelets (called thrombocytopenia) can be caused by many types of medication as well as several health conditions, including advanced liver disease. Best to have your doctor run tests to rule out possible causes. But as redgreenblue has said, 104 is not that bad at all. It's considered moderate thrombocytopenia. With platelet counts, trends matter so just try not to stress and watch the trends while the cause or causes are worked out.
