Bilirubin just over range

Hi

Recent bloods show bilirubin at 22 (0-21) so doc has ordered another test in 6 weeks.

Researching why my result was slightly over limit, I found an article that pointed out that athletes are usually over the range. I am a lifelong athlete. Never ever have alcohol.

Any ideas why athletes can have over range bilirubin please?

Thanks

"Several factors may contribute to high bilirubin levels in athletes:

Hemolysis: Intense physical activity, such as endurance sports or long-distance running, can lead to increased breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis). The released hemoglobin is processed in the liver, leading to increased bilirubin production and a temporary rise in bilirubin levels.

Dehydration: Athletes, especially those participating in endurance sports, may experience dehydration due to significant fluid loss through sweat. Dehydration can affect liver function, leading to an increase in bilirubin levels.

Muscle Damage: Intense exercise can cause muscle damage, leading to the release of myoglobin, a protein found in muscle tissue. The liver processes myoglobin, and its breakdown can contribute to elevated bilirubin levels.

Supplements or Medications: Some athletes may take dietary supplements or medications that can affect liver function and bilirubin levels. It is essential for athletes to be cautious about the use of such substances and to consult with healthcare professionals if necessary.

While temporary elevations in bilirubin levels can occur in athletes, persistent or significantly high bilirubin levels may indicate an underlying health issue that requires further evaluation. Conditions such as Gilbert's syndrome, liver disorders, or other medical conditions could also contribute to elevated bilirubin levels in athletes."

Thanks Mintvcx

That’s very helpful. Makes perfect sense.

Athletes train by inducing myalgia (muscle damage) then eat, rest and recover to a higher level than before the training.

Repeat.

I’ll not worry about the slight increase in my bilirubin anymore.

All the best

You're welcome. However please follow your doc recommendation about test in 6 weeks. Just in case. Also maybe ask about Gilbert's syndrome. It is the most common cause of high bilirubine and also pretty harmless. But usually it is higher when you have GS so I do not think it is your case.
