I had a TIPS procedure done three weeks ago after ruptured varacies during a banding session. I was just wondering what others experience has been with TIPS.
“Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a procedure that involves inserting a stent (tube) to connect the portal veins to adjacent blood vessels that have lower pressure. This relieves the pressure of blood flowing through the diseased liver and can help stop bleeding and fluid back up.”

Hi, I am just curious how you are doing after your TIPS procedure ? I have not had this done but I may consider in near future as I have grade IV varices that I do not want to burst. I am on carvedilol which I understand helps with portal pressure.
Did you have a trans jugular venogram to measure your portal pressure before the TIPS ? Do you know what your portal pressure is?
Also, my understanding is with a TIPS procedure, I believe the blood from your digestive tract is no longer filtered by your liver ? Was all this explained to you and do you have any concerns regarding this ? Wishing you good health!
I had TIPS done after a large bleed during a banding procedure. It was determined that they were at the maximum banding they could do on me (44 varacies banded). I was placed in the ICU and was heavily sedated and once I was stable I had TIPS done.
So far it has been good. They did increase my Nadalol dosage for portal hypertension. As well, I am on a blood thinner for three months after. Im not sure what the reasoning behind that. I’ve had nose bloods, which has been the worst part of it. Overall, it’s been a positive experience. All the best with your health.
