Advice on effects after tips. I'm waiting to finally get date soon for my TIPs procedure. Still scared but so fed up with having drains with not much change. This is due to alcohol dependency. I've not had a alcohol for 11hard months. Anyone had 1 and would appreciate feedback on how it went n what to kind of expect. Thanks

hi Segy

My son had a TIPS 2 month ago . Like you he has decompensated cirrhosis due to alcohol ( no alcohol for 18 month ) He was getting drained every week between 10 -12 litres .

The TIPS went well - just slight discomfort no pain afterwards he was in hospital 3 days .

Since then he is still being drained every week - only slightly less - 7 - 10 litres . He still has cramps afterwards . The consultant said it could take upto 3 - 6 month to show any real improvement in Ascites . He’s seeing the consultant tomorrow is I’ll let you know outcome . The procedure is very straightforward and z Stephen had no side effects afterwards but he did expect it To reduce the fluid quicker .

Hope this helps you - I really understand how difficult it must be for you . Best wishes Carol x

He’s 63 and he started drinking when he was about 17 as you go ! He had no symptoms until he started to cough up blood - he was given 3 month to live - he stopped drinking straight away and he’s still here just over 2 years later - so there is hope . Thinking of you and hope you’ve got someone to support you . Carol x

I had TIPS done last March, it was rather quick because of a massive bleed. Almost one year later my portal hypertension is good enough to take me off the beta blocker. My meld is down to 9 as of last week. Overall, it’s been good for me. Hope all goes well.
