Hello. I am new to the forum so apologies if I am covering issues repeatedly covered (I have done a quick search so hopefully will not be repetitive).
I am a female in my early-50s with a history of drinking above recommended limits (approx 30-40 units per week over a 20 year period). I am working very hard now to reduce these levels, with a view to complete abstinence.
I have had a series of blood tests in recent months to address a persistent issue with a metallic/bitter taste in my mouth. I have now had this for about a year and it seems worse than ever. My liver panel has been checked several times in that time but all results within normal range (although I know this does not rule out serious liver damage). The only things to be identified are a slightly low level of zinc but I am vegetarian which may be a contributory factor. Also, one of my immunoglobulin markers (M) is above the normal reference range.
I am in peri-menopause and have been on HRT since last May. I did wonder if the metallic taste could be linked to my hormones (and it is still possible this is the case) but I would have thought the HRT should have helped relieve the symptoms by now, if that were the case.
I seem to get a nagging ache in my right hand rib cage so am convinced I am some sort of liver damage but my GP seems to think that no further investigations are needed based on my blood results.
For those on the forum with diagnosed liver conditions, have you also experienced issues with a metallic taste and if so, has anything helped to reduce/relieve this?
Thank you in advance for any advice you may offer.

Hi Helen. I have cihrossis - I don't drink anymore. I have never had a metallic taste in my mouth. I've just turned 60 last month. It could be possibly a Vitamin B12 deficiency. I was also diagnosed with severe osteoporosis last year so can I suggest that you take Vitamin D and Calcium tablets. If I'd have known that taking Vit D and Calcium would have saved me from this awful thinning of my bones, I would have been straight into my local chemist to buy these. Drinking can deplete some vitamins from your body. Best to Google all of this as I'm not a gp. I don't know if I've been much help here.
Good luck with everything and try not to worry too much. You sound like a very positive lady too. Best wishes Golly x
Sounds a bit like acid reflux. Best to ask your Dr if it could be that? Acid reflux is worse when you eat anything citrus, tomatos and even greasy foods. It can also be worse with some tablets.
Thank you, Stickyman. The GP went down this route in the first instance and I was on Lanzoprazole for a few weeks but they didn't make any difference, so assume it isn't due to acid reflux
Hi Helen, I’ve never had a metallic taste in my mouth. I don’t think Mum did either. I know liver disease and the menopause can both cause weird symptoms including aches and pains but I’ve never heard of this one. Have you had Covid? I’ve heard that can cause it and it can linger. Also might be worth getting a dental check up (if you can get one).
Hello! Yes! I get a metallic taste in my mouth, what’s more my husband can taste it too when he kisses me, so it’s chemical, not psychological. I researched it, it could be caused by poor dental hygiene (mine hasn’t changed, but it’s the most common cause), colds or sinus issues (this could be the cause for me), or kidney or liver problems (there are a few other causes).
I should say I’m still in the process of being diagnosed - but I can put a tick against nearly every symptom for a certain liver disease.
