My son who has cirrhosis of the liver is planning to travel to Canada in the next week or so for about a month. He has travel insurance with his bank but am not sure it would cover this condition. Does he need special cover for his trip ? if so can anyone recommend a company that is reasonably priced

Absolutely does need specialist insurance. My bank did not cover me and wanted an extraordinary amount to upgrade. I use Staysure, they are very reasonable for trips to Europe but be prepared to pay quite a lot for travel to the States/Canada. They tell me it’s because of the ridiculous amounts they charge for medical treatment over there. Another factor is what stage he is at, does he have varices or any other complications associated with cirrhosis? If he does this will push the cost up even further.Good look
Yes he needs specialist cover. The BLT website has a page on insurance. Cirrhosis without varices is cheaper as it’s the risk of an oesophageal bleed that pushes up the cost of cover. My policy with two minor varices, for European annual cover with Avanti cost £500. Most mainstream insurers won’t cover cirrhosis with varices, or will charge a small fortune. Specialists such as Avanti, Allclear or Staysure will be able to help.
Often it's cheaper to get a year's worldwide cover than a single trip 4week policyList ALL ailments!
