Has anyone tried to get insurance to go abroad PT, if so do you have the company you used. I am going through the list the hospital gave us at the minute trying to find one not to expensive. ( TP was only 4 months ago). Will be looking about going away from June so that will make it 9 months

Hi Pauline. My partner went to Portugal for 5 days last year. He was 2 yrs post xplant. We used Saga travel & only paid about £18. Hope this helps. Enjoy your 1st holiday. XX

I have a funny idea that they advice you not to got abroad for at least 6-months post.

Richard that’s what QEHB told us one week before we were due to go away for an already paid for holiday 4 months post TP. We are sure noone told us about that previously but we got so many leaflets that it “might” be buried in there. It definitely was not said at our discharge session at which three of us were present. I suggested to the transplant co-ordinator that they should produce a succinct Post Transplant little booklet with dos and donts and associated timescales. A bit like the little green one we got pre transplant althought that had to be, by necessity, quite long 😁. She thought it a good idea but I hold out little hope!

I know very well of the little green book you are referring to, I still have mine. I know at one point they used to say about the cost factor of this little book and I recall asking if they would like it back. You may also recall a guy called Alan Hyde, Alan would give a talk pre-transplant about what to expect after the transplant. Well, I met up with Alan and his team on the Liver Voluntary support group and have since joined them up at the QE.
I really like the "Do's and Don't" idea, no doubt the cost of which could be paid for by a travel issuance company, who then advertise their own travel issuance rates and packages.

I DO remember that fantastic man Alan and in particular the photos of him pre transplant - my god he looked like he had been in a POW camp for years. Yoiks and more Yoiks, and now 17 - about- years later he looks great and as you will know is one of the nicest people you could meet!
He came to my bedside post tp in his role in the Support Group and we had a lovely chat - cheered me up no end. If you do that as well Richard I’m sure you know how much it will be appreciated 👍
Yes re travel insurance company - I’m sure they can afford it and get some free (nearly) advertising 😁

We were told last week not to go abroad for one year, and also ensure meds are with us and not in the hold .
We travel to Europe on the euro tunnel channel crossing their travel insurance does not care about the transplant as long as the Doc says its ok to travel.
All other advice about general holiday insurance I agree with.

Ah but what do the Hospital say about travel outside UK. We were told that travel outside UK before 6 months is up is “strongly advised” against. We had to cancel our trip - as I said earlier - because we didn’t know that ☹️

QE told me it was OK after 6 months and we checked again on a regular check up visit,
and put the comment in the review of the check up so we had proof
It seems from other posts the advice varies, it was like when you can drive, each consultant I asked, seemed to vary as we were paying for Taxis I needed to drive ASAP, it seems to definitive answer was as long as you can do an emergency stop, which in a modern car is not difficult., it was OK, I was comfortable with my scars after 4 weeks.

I completely agree.
Wrt driving I couldn’t get anyone to put in writing it was OK to drive for 4 months post TP. I know that a person who was in my ward was driving the same week he got out of hospital which I deffo thought was chancing it a bit!
I think I said earlier there should be a guidance booklet provided of dos and Donts post TP like the little green one we got before the TP 😁

I was also told to wait a year and only if there were no episodes of rejection, I used a comparison tool on Martin Lewis moneysavingexpert website and picked one from there, I found the fact I have high blood pressure added more to the policy than having a liver transplant, good luck and I hope you have a fantastic holiday 🌸🌸

If you find one please let me know, I went through a few of the one’s listed but gave up at that time. That was because I was having other unresolved issues. Can’t work up the enthusiasm to try again yet ☹️.

It will require confirmation from your consultant about your fitness to travel. I have just returned from a 7 week trip to the carribean and Usa. Got an initial quote of £25k but got a much more reasonable one from a company called insure with. My TP was aborted and I now have a terminal diagnosis. PM me if you want further details.

We went to lanzarote at Xmas when ds was 11 months PT but were told we could go at 6 months. We used all clear for an annual policy for Europe which was a good price but we want to go back to America next year and the prices are eye watering....we have since found worlds first and their prices are the best we have got.

I'm actually quite shocked that your consultant is allowing you to travel abroad so soon after your transplant? I did and am doing extremely good post but I've still got to wait the full year before I can travel abroad and that is only for short flight destinations and those that are less infection risk countries?
