Hi people. I'm wondering if any of you have breathing problems such as shortness of breath or a cough that gets better or disappears when you lie down? I've had this ever since I started having certain liver symptoms...

I have had shortness of breath for a couple of years and was diagnosed withy asthma even though the tests were inconclusive. After being diagnosed with stage 3 fibrosis of the liver I found that this can cause shortness of breath and think maybe it's this as inhalers don't really help.

Thanks for your reply, Jacky. Have you noticed whether your shortness of breath is related to the position of the body?

If I am a bit scrunched up I get rather wheezy.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome a rare diagnosis or easily missed entity? This condition is diagnosed in 15–30% cirrhotic patients, but again, studies which derived the prevalence were mostly done at transplant centers. Prospective multicenter prevalence studies HPS have not been reported till date.

I also suffered from shortness of breath for a couple of years before my liver diagnoses. And recently it’s been quite bad however, I had a gi bleed recently and they found I was suffering from a very low blood count which makes your heart race and your organs work overtime and thus makes me breathless. Have you had recent blood tests. Lorraine

Thanks for reply, Lorraine. My hemoglobin and erythrocytes are always slightly elevated. I suspect that this is due to micro shunting of blood in the lungs, since visible shunts were not detected on contrast-enhanced CT.
