Just spoke to son on phone he says his urine is brown. He has just been diagnosed with decompensated liver disease . I have read about this so understand slightly the cause. What I don't know is does he need emergency treatment for this today. He has an appointment for a scope on Tuesday to check varies banding he had done while an inpatient. He has been home from hospital since 10th February and still hasn't seen a liver specialist. I spent two days on phone trying to out if he has a specialist and appointment to see one. To cut a long story short the referral from his foot consultant to liver specialist was over looked as someone had over looked the last sentence on letter requesting an out patient department. The letter was dated 22 February. Luckily we had copy of letter so I could see it with my own eyes and was, able to point it out to her. I was told when I spoke to appointment that he was in the system but only as routine and could wait 6 months for app. We had already arranged app for the ourselves. Our local hospital does not fill us with confidence. Anyway sorry to prat on. Dont know what to do about brow wee. X

Brown urine is a common symptom of later stage liver disease when the liver is struggling to function - it can also be caused by dehydration so make sure he is taking enough fluid. Brown urine isn't listed as one of the red flag symptoms that require urgent medical intervention but it may be worth him having a urine sample dip tested to make sure it isn't blood in the urine or other issues.

The BLT page on cirrhosis lists the following as red flag symptoms that do require urgent medical attention.

If you have any of the following symptoms you must see a doctor straight away, especially if you have recently been diagnosed with cirrhosis:

fever with high temperatures and shivers, often caused by an infection

shortness of breath

vomiting blood

very dark or black tarry stools (faeces)

periods of mental confusion or drowsiness.

Although these symptoms may seem very different, because your liver is responsible for so many different functions, if it stops working properly, a range of problems can result.

Hope he/you get to see a doctor soon to get to the bottom of all his issues.

Hello cookies mom. I had brown/dark urine for weeks. It went away 2 weeks after I quit drinking. I was in the hospital at that point because they thought I had something else. I was dehydrated, malnourished from vitamins etc.. the urine turning dark is a sign he needs to be seen very soon. I’m now compensated so there is hope. Haven’t had dark urine since.
