Is this the end ?

My Dad has decompensated cirrhosis due to alcohol abuse. He stopped drinking 8 months ago and his blood tests improved considerably since then. His MELD score dropped from 21 to 18. I thought this is good news however, 2 days ago he started vomiting a yellowish- orangish liquid ( not sure if it was ascites) also he can’t eat, is very weak and lays in bed most of the time, he barely can get up to go to the toilet. I am very scared this is the end. Has anyone had this type of episode and felt better after?

Thank you and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas 🎅!

Hi 🙂

I don't think you can vomit ascites, usually it is either drained or goes with medication. It is more likely to be bile?

Best to get to Dr's or Consultant ASAP.

Try not to worry easier said than done, I know.

Others will be along soon with some theories and advice.

Take good care 😊

Hi Simonamur

Craciun fericit

It could be something as simple as food poisoning and his body is rejecting it. But it is still important to get him to visit a doctor or better, if possible, get a doctor to visit him to check him properly, a blood test would probably be enough to diagnose him.

As he has a decompensated liver, he should always get every problem checked as soon as possible. Regardless of what is causing it, he needs to eat.

I hope he can regain his strength and appetite soon

Dave

Hello,

I am sorry to hear your father is so unwell. Your fellow forum users are absolutely right to say that your father needs medical assessment as soon as possible. It may be that there is something that can be done to inprove the situation eg if he has an infection he could have antibiotics, if he is dehydrated - fluids, if he is constipated - laxatives. Without medical assessment it is impossible to know.

I hope you are able to get him seen today. If you have time later do let us know how things go. We all send you are best wishes.

regards

He doesn’t want to go to the hospital to see the doctor :( . I hope we can get his Doctor to come and visit him.

Update - my mum called an ambulance and they took him to the hospital. Apparently he was feeling weak because his blood pressure was low from diuretics. He will have to stop taking them for few days until his strength is back.

That's a relief - knowing he is receiving the help he needs! I find it extremely stressful and exhausting when my husband isn't feeling well but refusing to go to the doctors. Hopefully your dad will get better soon! x

With a MELD of 18 it is unlikely to be the end. You can’t vomit ascites as it sits outside the stomach in the cavity where the organs are. It sounds like he’s vomited bile. Are you absolutely sure he hasn’t been drinking?

He could just have been nauseous and vomited bile because his stomach was empty. This would not kill you.

I agree with the above comments. You can't throw up ascitic fluid. You can only pee it out (or have it taken out with a needle).

Could he have been drinking again and be having a "throw up" level hangover?

Or could he just innocently have eaten something a bit bad and have food poisoning?

Don't panic just yet. And it is not ascites, don't worry in that direction at all.
