Dizzy

I have cirrhosis and now since April I have portal hypertension and having varices banded , I’m living a normal life without to many symptoms of anything luckily but over the last few months I’ve been getting really dizzy usually when I stand up from sitting but also sometimes for no reason , just wonder if anyone has this or if it’s a totally different problem. My blood pressure seems fine . I know you aren’t doctors but was just interested if this is a common problem at all . Thanks

Hi Lilliebell I too have this problem, I previous to being diagnosed with stage 4 Liver Disease I had high blood pressure and was medicated for it, but now mine is due to postural drop , I became dizzy when sitting to standing , because of this they are presently not prescribing beta blockers for portal hypertension, hope this helps, Take care x

Ahh that helps make me feel better thanks for replying , I haven’t been prescribed beta blockers for portal hypertension, I’ve got my consultant appointment end of October so will mention this to him or my doctor before hand maybe . Xx

I'd get checked by GP, numerous issues (unrelated to your liver issues) can cause dizziness - things like ear problems etc. My hubby has cirrhosis and loads of issues previously with portal hypertension and has never suffered dizziness.

Hi, just a quick one- my partner has cirrhosis and we had an incident last week that caused serious disorientation and lack of response. It turned out that an increase in his water tablets caused his sodium levels to crash to 121 from normal 135. This was a new one to me as I’ve tried to look into possible problems and what to look out for.Have you had bloods done recently?

Thanks for your reply , that’s very interesting and hope your partners feeling better now .I’ve not had my bloods done since March but am due to talk to my consultant the end of this month and usually have my bloods done soon after . I’m not on any water tablets and don’t have ascites (i hope ) . I did ask if I could talk to my consultant sooner but it’s not possible apparently. Only seem to have had this problem since I started having portal hypertension and varices, I put it down to a bit of anxiety at first but I don’t think it is .

Hi Lilibell, I don’t know if this is a possibility, but could you get your bloods done before your clinic appointment? I get either my GP or the liver nurse at the hospital to send me a blood test form so that I can have mine done a week before my clinic appointment. That way the consultant has the most up to date picture. Your GP may be able to test for other things that could cause dizziness at the same time.

Ooh thank you I hadn’t thought of that but it’s a great idea ,I don’t have a liver nurse as such but will check to see if I can hold of someone in hepatology , I was hoping I could get my next endoscopy done before my consultant appointment to so will get on the case now . Thanks again x

HiI also have been suffering with dizziness I have portal hypotension and I do take beta blockers my dizziness like yours can be when standing up or even turning over in bed or for no reason at all. It is worrying at times. I also suffer with a rapid heart beat at night it stops me from sleeping sometimes I’ve seen my g.p who seems to think this is stress I’m really not sure I do suffer with stress but have done for years.

Regards

Thanks for your reply , it’s very annoying isn’t it and worrying as I think I’m going to fall over sometimes , like you I wondered if it’s a stress thing but I don’t feel stressed and it’s definitely more when standing from sitting or lying down . I’ve massaged my doctor so I will see what he says , take care xx

I had the dizzy spells and also I felt light headed every time I stood up. When I do a blood pressure test it always comes back normal. After a few weeks it just went away and I still don't know what it was.

My consultant said it may of been an ear infection.

Good luck with your dizziness.

Another symptom we have to put up with.

Yes mine is the same so getting up slower , my blood pressure does go down a bit when standing , some days not too bad and other days really dizzy 😵‍💫. My symptom today is a pain in my shoulder blade which I know can be my liver but I also have been digging in the garden 🤷🏼‍♀️ No point in stressing , Glad your has gone now and hopefully mine will to xx

I did the same. Had a minute to settle every time I got up.I remember walking into the kitchen and propping myself up until it eased off.

I became that used to it I didn't even realise it had gone.

Hopefully yours will be the same.x

Don't fall!

Hi Lilliebell, As I do not have dizziness at this time I also was diagnosed with compensated cirrhosis with portal hypertension 1 and half years ago. I also am in recovery from alcohol and have 6 months clean. Congratulations to your 5 years clean!!! That is awsome!!! I am on a betablocker that I hope helps. I will be getting an endoscopy next week so we shall see. This forum has helped me tremendously just knowing I'm not alone!!! If you ever need someone to talk to just let me know. Life can be difficult and recovery even more so!! I take life one day at a time dealing only with what I'm faced with that day!!! More than that can be too much!!! I am SO thankful for the love and support I find on here. I do hope you find some answers for your dizziness. Stay encouraged, 🌺Anna🌺

Aww 😊 thank you candy cane, well done to you for 6 months clean that’s excellent, I hope you find yourself feeling better each day just as I have , my dizziness seems to be my blood pressure going low when standing so I’m now getting up slower lol 😆 seems to help . I’ve got my 6 month appointment with my consultant tomorrow so will be good to ask him a few questions this time as last time I spoke to him I hadn’t had an endoscopy or banding but have since . I love this forum , I didn’t find it until last year and I’m so glad I did , now I’ve done 5 years I hopefully can help some people and anything new comes up for me is great to ask on here also as some people have so much experience. Stay well and keep up the fabulous work , I’m also always here for a chat . Onwards and upwards 🙌🏻Xx
