I have just been prescribed questran by my consultant for extreme itching. Was wondering if anyone else had been prescribed this medication for the same reason and if it worked for them
Questran : I have just been prescribed... - British Liver Trust
Questran
Nope, but am itching like crazy so going to try to nail Dr down to try it! 🌹
I’m in UK, so it’s just about time to go try to sleep! Have ice bathed and added anti-itch stuff, wish me well please ♥️🌹
Hope you get a comfortable sleep, take care 😴
Itching can be caused by your liver. So questran is a bile sequestrant (cholestyramine) so will help bind the bile. I take it due to bile issues.
I was admitted to my local hospital for itching so bad i’d ripped the skin on my right arm. They were in contact with Leeds who suggested trying an IV antihistamine which took the edge off. I was discharged with the antihistamine (piriton).
Three weeks later got admitted directly to Leeds itching again so bad I literally was deranged, QUESTRAN was like a miracle, stopped the itching almost instantaneously which led them to suspect it was indeed bile related. MRI showed bile duct blockage. So discharged on QUESTRAN awaiting ERCP to insert stent in bile duct. Took 3 sachets of QUESTRAN daily till stent inserted and once that happened I no longer needed the medication at all. That was 4 mths ago, now waiting to have stent removed.
QUESTRAN really was a miracle, only side effect was severe constipation so I was prescribed MOVICOL to help that.
Am glad you found questran really helpful with the itching. It can drive you crazy Hopefully it works for me. Hope all goes well with removal of stent
A natural antihistamine is sodium bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda NOT baking powder). Mix a small amount with the same amount of potassium bicarbonate in water and drink on an empty stomach (might want to sip over about 30 minutes) first thing in the morning 2 hours before eating . The potassium is important as the bicarb of soda can reduce the amount of potassium in the body, hence why it’s important to include. Limit to once or twice per week as and when needed.
Apparently sodium bicarb encourages body that there’s no need to launch a full on protective immune response, discourage the unnecessary production of histamine and helps reduce inflammation. There’s plenty of info online, research to get a better understanding before trying to take full responsibility for your own well being.
Good Luck. 👍🏻
Check with your Hepatologist on the sodium and potassium, as could cause real problems, especially if you are on other meds and/or have liver disease. I hope the itching stops soon, Braveheart that picture is pretty extreme, you must be really suffering!
Hi, I was really suffering. I am almost scared to write this but no itching now for about 4 mths since the stent was inserted. I developed pancreatitis after that procedure and the stent needs to come out now as it’s causing pain so fingers crossed when it’s removed next week the pancreatitis doesn’t reappear as I found it to be much worse than the actual transplant.
Oh bless you. I really hope it goes well and I truly mean that. I’ll have everything crossed for you 🤞
