Hi, I was prescribed gabapenton back in 2015 in the US as I was suffering from a terrible case of sciatica. Please be careful as far as I know this is a powerful drug used for nerve pain. If I had to do it over again, I would not take it. Please inquire that it causes no liver damage. I took it for over a month and honestly I have no idea if it caused damage to my liver. I have cirrhosis now and a multitude of things may have caused it.

If you only took it for a month at the prescribed dosage it was perfectly safe.

Hi Livmar, my brother was prescribed gabapentin for neck pain in Feb 2019, he was on 900mg per day. Foolishly he drank with these tablets as the pain was bad plus he was depressed and that combination led to him being hospitalised with cirrhosis in October the same year. The Drs told him that he had a 50% chance of survival, then his kidneys started to fail and he was given a 20% chance. That then reduced even further and he made a will from his hospital bed and signed a DNR as the dr's said he wouldn't survive the weekend. I asked the dr's why he was still on gabapentin - they said 'oh, we can wean him off them if you want'. 4 weeks later he was out of hospital (he spent a total of 7 weeks in there). The consultant was astounded he'd made a recovery as she was convinced he would die. His liver scans are clear now, the sonographer said his liver was smooth and you would never know he has cirrhosis. I cannot believe that gabapentin had nothing to do with his illness, yes he was drinking too much whilst on this drug but to make such a miraculous recovery after stopping taking it must lead to questions. I have friends that work in the pharma world and that is one drug they have said 'no way' would they take it. It is usually for nerve pain so I'm unsure why you've been given it. Personally I would steer clear - ps my brother had terrible itching and was given Questran Light 4g Sachets Colestyramine. Once he was out of hospital he didn't need to take them any more and doesn't itch anymore.Good luck ❤️

Hi Artemis61, thank God your brother is OK and doing fine. Drugs and constant bad food can indeed kill us. I have learned my lesson and stay clear of everything that can harm me. Wish you and your brother good health 🙏.

I have been prescribed it for itching. I’ve been taking it for two weeks. It works. The only treatment so far to help. No side effects so far.

It is Gabapentin and it is a heavy duty drug to be given for itching. Have a read and perhaps ring the Helpline. I personally take an Otc, non-addictive but sedative ant-hi stamine which I was first given in rehab and my GP os happy with. Wendy

It is actually primarily an anticonvulsive / antiepiletic drug that has some 'off-label' applications also.

I know that. I am kindly suggesting OP thinks this through and asks some questions

I've been prescribed Gabaperpentin for nerve pain and Quinine for itching and leg cramps. Hope that helps a little.

I was prescribed Gabapentin when I had shingles. Doc said take 3-4 a day but 1 knocked me on my butt. At night - maybe take the higher dose to help with sleep and itching.

Just because you can take a drug as prescribed does not mean it is the right thing to do for your health, sorry. If you can manage your itching and insomnia in another way, it would be good
