Oedema?!..not sure

I hope you are all safe and well as can be?Oedema?!..I am not totally sure? I am new to this forum btw and full of uncertainty. I was diagnosed with Decomposed liver disease /cirrhosis in February after nearly passing away. I didn't and I am here. My condition is alcohol induced and I have been sober since, I have gained weight and muscle as I was wasting away, my ascites is under control. I was drained of 16 litres of fluid. I thought I was having twins and I am a man!?.... Anyway, I have had an endoscopy and have grade 2 varices and had my blood tested which I am waiting for.

I have recently had bulging veins in my lower legs and they are starting to swell too, I get dizzy spells and assume it is all blood pressure related ?!...

I thought it will pass but it is has not. I was hoping for any suggestions or do I bite the bullet and contact the doctors?

Thanks for checking out my post!

Mark

If your legs are swelling then I would absolutely get checked out by your doctor. Are you following a low salt diet to try to control fluid build up? I take it you are on diuretics. This needs checking to see if it is oedema since fluid can become infected.

Hi Katie, thanks for your insight. Truthfully, I need to address my diet more rigidly. I do ok with it generally but find it difficult. I am taking diuretics. But you are right regarding the infection threat.

Thanks

Mark

Welcome to the forum Mark, As per what Katie mentioned in her reply to you ,please make contact with your Gp or even the hospital you are under don't leave things to chance .

Try not to worry I too was similar to yourself with end stage alcohol related cirrhosis, drained three times in 6 weeks plus .. your off that demon alcohol that's the main thing important here.

Let us know how you get on

Thanks Linda, yeh the demon has left the building!!..and never to return. I guess the phrase 'rock bottom' comes into play. I will phone the doctor tomorrow.

I will let you know the outcome.

HimMark, just a supplement to Millie and Kate, sound advice by the way! Diuretics are a nightmare for causing dizziness. You will find your proper level in months to come. If you find your kidneys are okay, mine weren’t for nearly a year with decompensated cirrhosis, then taking your diuretics just before you sleep normally nullifies the dizzy spells. My gp baulked at this suggestion by me. She was screaming that I would be up peeing all night. But she did relent and let me try. It worked and now she a little older and wiser too😁

Hi 'cammeag', thanks for your post on dizziness. It is a nasty feeling and it comes on when I least expect it...like when I am with my son playing chess!!🤔I will be seeing a doctor tomorrow and discuss the diuretics. The GPs won't change anything on my prescription until I see the Consultant.

Hopefully they can change the dose or medication.

Well done btw to get through the Decompensated stage..it is hideous and have much respect for people getting through.

Look after yourself.

Hi Hey 👋

When you have any new symptom its always worth getting it checked out. Your docs will want to know anyway as it helps them manage you and make sure that if any treatment is required it can be started early.

Sometimes its not easy to decide whether you should bother them or not. But in this case its definitely worth getting that confirmation. Good luck to you.
