I am new here. I have been reading all your posts and i must say it sure gave me support and hope.I just want to say thank you.
My husband is in stage 3 liver failure.(Cirrhosis). He has all the symptoms, except bleeding , like coughing up blood or passing blood. His Gastroenterologist confirmed he has alcoholic hepatitis. So today we start treatment. I read there is a chance once he starts the medication he might die,or his mortality rate will be 90 days. I am terrified, maybe i am just over reacting. His 45 years old. He started drinking very young. Today his 31 days free from alcohol and we have a long way to go as far as healing. I am so afraid of him taking this steroid, but i do want him to heal and survive this disease.
Will my husband be ok taking this meds.

Hi Glyn, forget mortality rates and all that, they are guidelines for doctors and what is important for your partner is a sustained and permanent cessation of alcohol. It is possible to slow and even reverse some degree of liver disease if the cause is identified and stopped. In this way the liver has a chance to become less inflamed and heal to a degree.
Good diet and exercise too are important to get him on a road to recovery.
I've never heard of methylprednisolone being used in a patient with alcohol related liver disease but your doctor obviously knows more than I do and it is perhaps being used to bring down the inflammation in the liver - prednisolone is prescribed commonly to patients with auto immune related conditions to try and slow the inflammation - my hubby with cirrhosis due to auto immune related liver disease has been on prednisolone (only 5mg) since 2014.
The BLT has very useful guides on alcohol related liver disease and cirrhosis. Where are you in the world? It's just that medical procedures do differ across the globe and some of our knowledge may differ from your areas systems.
When you say strict diet what do you mean? Have doctors advised this or a dietician?
Dietary needs do change when you have liver disease but it depends on stage and the state of overall health. If very overweight then yes a diet might be needed, in my hubbies case he was actually malnourished and was put on a diet plan to up his calorific intake of both carbs and protein. A liver specialist dietician is a good person to see to physically assess the state of your partner and advise appropriate individual dietary needs.
One note of warning with the steriods especially at that dosage - they tend to give folk a false hunger and it's easy to gain weight with them too through nibbling.
Hi there Katie, no specific diet, his not overweight just the abdomen swollen. No red meat, only fruits and veggies,no starch,NO SALT!!!!!! ,and no sugar. We started the steroid today, 20 day treatment, 2nd ultra sound on Friday Wish us luck. 🙏
Has this diet been advised by the liver doctor because carbs and protein are vitally important to ensure the patient fuels properly and muscles don't waste away.
Katie
