Borderline liver test result
There are a lot of things it can be. It could be a virus your body was fighting, medications you were taking (including OTC or supplements), or it could be the alcohol, especially if you drank in the days immediately preceding the blood test. The other thing it could be is fatty liver due to diet. This is very common in the USA, and I imagine in the UK too, if that's where you are.
Do you know which numbers were elevated, and how much they were elevated?
Thankyou for your reply yes I am in the uk im insure about numbers sorry he just told me my results were borderline for my liver function
If your LFTs were just “borderline”, I wouldn’t worry too much. I am assuming this is AST and ALT they are talking about. Doctors (at least in the USA) don’t tend to get really worried until they are 2-3 times normal. So if they are just borderline, the doctors might just recommend checking again next year.
Hello Lisa and welcome.
Do you by any chance happen to know what is causing your underactive thyroid? Are you taking any other medication such as depression?
I understand that there is a link between an underactive thyroid and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). I wouldn't normally advise people to go trolling the internet in search of answers, but I have found this German website (in English) to be rather informative: boostthyroid.com/blog/fatty....
I hope this helps.
Best Wishes
Richard.
At last! I asked my doctor about a link between my underactive thyroid and fatty liver - he said not, but my research said yes. I'll take a look at the link you put up, thank you!
Hi Lisa1324 and welcome to this forum. Have you been told by your GP that you have a fatty liver? It may be useful to clarify this with your GP. Useful blood tests to ask for are a FIB-4 or ELF test and dependent on those results, you may need a fibroscan or ultrasound. Your GP is best placed to diagnose you as to why your liver bloods were borderline.
Best wishes, Trust10
Nope he hasn't said I have a fatty liver he has told me he wants to wait a further 6 weeks and redo the test and if still the se he will look further into it thankyou for your reply 😉
Hi Lisa, that's great that your GP is repeating them - the best way to establish if there is anything warranting further investigation. I've attached a link to liver blood screen explained in the British Liver Trust website - you may find it helpful.
