Update: My partner is home!!!!

Afternoon everyone,

My partner was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after spending 3 weeks there with a decompensated liver caused by alcoholic hepatitis. He has improved so much such being admitted and now it’s just the case of getting into a routine at home. He still has jaundice (it is slowly fading), ascities and swollen feet and ankles. I encourage him to walk around the house (two flights of stairs to the bedroom 😱so confined to downstairs during the day. Loo is downstairs), and eat regularly with lots of fruits and vegetables for snacks. He eats as much as he can but normally doesn’t finish meals. He has a protein drink in the morning. He has lactulose twice a day but is feeling so bloated so he cannot eat much and struggling to open his bowels at times. He does snooze a lot but I know that is to be expected. Is there anything else I can do to help him?

Thank you

Xx

Such good news🙏 Personally my ascites could not be managed by furosemide and spironolactone, so when I got bloated I had drains which would make me more comfortable and my appetite was better and I had more energy. So that might be worth keeping a bit of a watch on.

Has he seen a dietician who has recommended the type of diet he needs? The drinks are high in protein too which should help.

Well done to both of you🤗🙏

thank you so much 😊

He hasn’t seen a dietitian and the hospital did not give me any information about his diet and the dos or don’ts of what to eat. I found out through the internet and a helpful member of this group, he is only on furosemide at the moment. He has an appointment with the liver specialist in about two weeks. We are waiting for confirmation of the appointment. He is so determined to get as well as he can

I’d definitely ask for him to see a dietitian, it was really important to me and their advice for me as I had lost such a lot of weight was high protein and although it was good to be healthy it was better to get calories in to try and maintain/put on weight. I had to take two fortisip drinks a day and also was prescribed high protein jellies. I am talking from my own personal point of view but I found the dieticians were brilliant 👍

I will definitely get him to see a dietician. I want all the information I can to ensure that he recovers and can lead a good quality of life x

Hi I was discharged from hospital last April after spending nearly 4 weeks in there with same sort of thing. The jaundice did eventually go took a couple of months and I was on both them water tablets spent most of the time in the loo. I am now fluid free and just on 50g of one of them which Dr says I don't really need but to ease me off them. My scan results are now showing little scarring and all blood tests are good. I was put forward to go to a dietician but didn't go I should have but when my appetite returned which did take a while I tried to cut down on too much fatty food, salt, but ate lots of fruit. Hope he continues to get better and you sound like you are very caring too. Lots of luck x
