What to look for

Hi as previously posted my wife has fatty liver disease. A transplant has been ruled out as has the TIPS procedure.

Her ascites fluid buildup needs draining again.

Five weeks ago her consultant told me she may only have 3 to 4 weeks to live. She came home 4 weeks ago and considering her condition is doing well. She is climbing the stairs with me helping daily. She is eating , and I am daily checking her BP and oxygen levels which have all been fine.

Her sugar levels are a bit high but not dangerously high.

Now I know she will deteriorate but what should I be looking for. I couldn’t stand to see her in pain.

Hello lovely. I'm so sorry to hear what you and your wife are going through. I don't know what you should expect, but I would suggest contacting your consultant and the helpline provided by the British Liver Trust for the best advice. I hope you take good care of yourself and I send all good wishes. 🤗

Hi,

It sounds like your poor wife is a fighter, which is good. If she gets to the stage of needing pain relief, you will know, and can get her the help she needs.

Liver disease does, sometimes, give pain as in my case, but hopefully it is manageable with the right medication.

I hope and pray that you and your poorly wife have a peaceful and happy time together for as long as possible🙏🙏🙏

Sorry to hear this. My dad who passed away last week was having to be drained every other week and the fluid they removed was getting less despite him still bein as big as the fluid building back up within a couple of days.

Symptoms we never knew to look out for at the end were that they couldn’t get his potassium level down, and his kidney function was dropping. They were not happy with his blood results and said they were deranged.

He became quite immobile after getting unsteady leading to a fall. His legs were leaking all the time despite dressing regularly they were wet through and they had to put towels on his bed.

He was confused, withdrawn, terribly anxious, conversations stopped, stopped eating, drinking and no urine output, yellow tinged.

My dads condition became hepatorenal syndrome HRS which is worth looking up as it very sudden and in his case caused a sudden heart arrhythmia and he slipped away quickly.

My best wishes to you both it’s terribly difficult and a terrible illness.
